Who can bore a Sterling body?

Can anyone bore the breech of a Sterling 0.8" deeper, so a Freak insert can go right up to the bolt face? (Follow up question - can you bore a barrel back 4.2" deep for a Freak insert to stick out .8"?)

This is a major design flaw with these, so I expect more than one person would want the job done. I'll be the first, if it's not too pricey.

The body is 5.5" long and both ends are square, the upper tube is around .691", and it's Spyder threads.

the pwr insert will stick out and provide support to slot the feed, I dont know if you can do that clean with a thin walled freak

Right? Just some electrical tape in the barrel and no roll outs for the kid! .

Maybe it's just me.

The ball sits in the breech, which is .691". The distance from the bolt face to the barrel is 0.8", so there's room for the ball to roll around. Depending on paint size, this could send the ball into the back of the barrel (which, for my paint, is usually about .675") at a pretty good speed.

My preference is to have the paintball IN the barrel when the gas hits it, on any pump. I know open bolt guns chamber the ball pretty quickly too, but I dislike it if I have the choice. It's actually the thing I like least about the Phantom, too.

So there is a thing happened inside the gun that cannot actually be seen, only determined with measurements, and you…just don’t like it. That’s the entire problem?

I think I’m good. My Sterlings and my Phantoms all shoot great, most do. If my two year old Sterling had any issues related to this I would have noticed it when I was slinging most of a case of paint through it at max ROF at Monster Game last year. If I don’t get a break in 1500 shots the gun is good. I plan on shooting even more through it at this years MG. I’ll update if I get a break or if I have to replace the Freedummy insert that I put in there when I got it.

Yup, precisely! It can't be seen (since aluminum is frustratingly opaque), only measured, but I don't like it.

But hey, good to know yours works well with only a Freedummy.

I haven't noticed any issues with mine. I use a freak barrel and don't use a freedummy detent.

So again… you just don’t like it? It’s not shooting squirrelly or breaking rounds or anything. It’s an entirely academic technical thing that has no downside and you just don’t like it so much that you want to machine the body and barrel to make them essentially proprietary forever?

Have you considered making your live easier and just not measure the insides of your gun and being as happy as everyone else with a Sterling?

I think Zeta just likes things the way they are. Which is ok. I like to tinker. We're wired differently.

I am now wondering whether a nubbin detent that holds the ball "back" against the bolt face, to keep it in a consistent position (and prevent rollouts with a large barrel) would be an easier route that would do the job.

Then I'll bore it later, just to annoy Zeta.

at the end of the day it's your marker do whatever you want with it! If you think it'll make a difference i say go for it.

I've long agreed with your view. That ridiculous free bore issue is irritating. I'd have some cut down freak xl tubes done at the same time and run them with a regular freak barrel. Would be perfect.
