    Phantom wood handles

Playing around with laser engraver. Decided to try and make a pump handle with it and see if could be done.

There made up of 38 layers of 1/8 plywood glued together.

Brown one is basic copy of the t-handle the ripple was hard to clean and came uneven,
So, on the whitish one I made them smooth so it could be cleaned easier.
Now working on a third one. Will be making this one a little fatter. Found a few spots that get too thin after sanding.
Will try a 4th round one to see holds up on the lathe.

I would be interested in buying one. Would look very nice when stained. Think you could make grip panels from the same material so it matches?

Yes could be done. But if I did they would more likely be just basic cut outs, The time involved in just getting to that point would almost be in the too expensive to be worth it.

I'd buy one. I'd also buy one of those shims you whipped up for your old kits.

Those shims only work with this batch.

I'll pm you. I got a used pump kit, and I think it's one of yours that needs a shim. But I'll confirm in pms.

I would be worried they would swell if they get wet. paint oils will likely eat the glue over time to,

          They do look cool tho.

            Was wondering about this myself.

          These are super cool.

Can I recommend soaking them in a wipe-on urethane after glue- up to protect them from the elements?

Vacuum chamber and Cactus Juice would work even better.

Now that's some cool stuff. But to be worth it for the setup. I would need to make a ton of them.

You guys underrate the durability of wood, IMHO. If this was compressed enough and made with quality glue then it isn’t going to get mushy and fall apart unless you’re playing underwater or something. It’s plywood, not MDF.

Carnauba is way better that urethane if you have the elbow grease. If you’re just going to basically paint it then why even have wood in the first place?

Don't Like painting wood. Stains sometimes for effects. But I all ways have an issue deciding on sealing. Never had much luck with urethane, unless I'm spraying it. and setting up and cleaning the gun is defiantly not worth it in this case. 2-part Epoxy on the other hand would defiantly look good and be durable.

Wax looks nice and is good in all aspects. But requires maintenance that most will not be willing to do.

While I agree plywood even 1/8th inch is pretty tough stuff, I still would impregnated the end fiber with something to prevent moisture causing separation of the plies due to swelling and staining from random paint hits, oils, etc.. Sure a good waxing or oiling will work in general but does require the user to reapply occasionally. If I was to make something like this to sell to the populous I would do something to permanently seal the wood so none of the asshats out there will not complain to me or about my stuff because they did not care for it properly.

When you perfect this to your liking I will definitely be in the market for one. I have a Mozak blank body build coming up and a good grippy wood pump handle would be a perfect fit!
