    Tippmann 98 magfed mod

My son is getting the itch to mod something and is interested in magfed play. We’ve seen the Tacamo conversion kits and the 3D printed feed neck magwell adapters, but he wants to actually hack things up.

Any of you know of a T98 mod where the original body is used, but cut & modded with an added magwell? We have friends with 3D printers who can help with that part.

Ihave basic cutting tools - i.e. a dremel, hand drill, drill press - and also love chopping into things. Would be a fun father/son project as we wait for the weather to improve 😀

Sellsword has a kit that requires you to modify the body. Block the old feed hole and drill a new one

That’s the first left feed I’ve seen - very cool. Would work better for a right-handed player than using the existing feed port!

I have modded the 98 and just about every type of similar blow back guns. You may want to decide on bottom feed or side feed. If side feed, right or left. There are several places to get 3d printed magwells for side feed. I have modded the factory 98 magwell for both side and bottom feed. I had many photos of the mods up on MCB gallery, before the hack. I can post photos again if needed

COB I would love to see what you’ve done! We’ve looked at the adapters that fit right onto the current feed port, but he wants to try something that looks more traditional and would work for a right-handed player.

I liked the PZ98 adapter - thought it was rather slick since it allows converting between mag and hopper feeds pretty easily, and it doesn’t stick straight out.
The PZ98 Adapter Want a quick and easy to use magfed adapter for your Tippmann 98 Custom? Well so did I! I designed a latch…

But my boy wants to try a bottom feed - he’s enjoyed using bottom-mounted mags in airsoft. If you’ve got pics posted or saved somewhere, that’d be super to use them as a guide for us!

Awesome, so you ground off the front grip + some meat to get the mag to line up and added a hole for the paint to feed in. Couple questions then.
We’re you able to integrate a ball detent anywhere?
What’s your system for holding a mag in the body? Did you manufacture a magwell somehow?

'In the earlier guns, I made a metal mag well. After I began modding everything, I used Tippmanns' factory mag well modded to fit. I also used 3d printed mag wells from several sources. The key is to be sure that the magazine follower reaches into the bottom of the chamber, so the last ball in fully seated to be chambered not chopped in half. The pressure from the magazine spring holds the ball in place. I did not fit a detent. Epoxy putty was used to fill the original feed port. Also critical is placement of the new hole. Make sure in comming balls clear the bolt. Also, that the feed angle does not cause balls to jamb.

Man oh Man that Thompson is awesome

The Thompson stocks are original, the fore grip and hand grip are handmade. The idea, for the rear projection for the stock, came from OneRoundOneBody on YouTube. I took their dress up ideas and made it mag fed.

Nope, been waiting for him to catch up on homework. He’s good now, just in time for a break week. We’ll probably start chopping and drilling over the weekend.

A lot of what we’ll start with is someone else’s 3D printer model for a mag well - there are a bunch of right feed options that we will try to convert into a vertical feed mag well. That way we won’t have to reinvent the basic dimensions and mag release. It’ll also give us cutting guidance.

We also wanted to make a T98 right feed cap that will function as a removable detent cover just in case.

Quick update. Saw a YouTube video with someone else’s work (video linked below) and we’re using it for inspiration. Decent work, but we wanted a cleaner way to attach it to the gun. He wants to use Helix or DMags instead of Zeta mags, but the principle is the same.

We fiddled around with a model for a mag well that pointed straight out from the feed port. Because the mag well model wasn’t aligned with the xyz axes, it was tough to get it adjusted to our uses. We scrapped that after a few hours and started with this one as the base:

My son went through and deleted all the lines from where the feed path in the mag well started to turn. He made it as far as extending the feed port straight out a little ways, but has some more to go. Once he’s done (hopefully tomorrow) we’ll send it to his friend with a printer. We’ll probably do the prototype in PLA because it’s easier to print, then after any adjustments are done we’ll print in ABS. No cutting yet, but we did order a DMag from MCS to test the mag well. I’m letting my son drive this one since it was his idea and I think it’s best in the long run for him to claim the bragging rights when it’s done. I’m assisting when he gets stuck.

I’ll post pics when we have something more tangible to show everyone.

This hits some VERY similar things I had plans on doing to a Tigershark to make it a poor-man's Hammer 7. This is definite inspiration!
