Tales from Der PrinterSchrank: Where my Freaks at?

Our very own Trbo323 had pulled out his trumpet and made a request recently for a double decker Freak XL case, to hold both a full set of XL freak inserts AND his 14" one-piece DW barrel... Cue the music!

My concept started out as all good ideas do - a napkin sketch:


When I had some more time, it continued to develop into a whiteboard sketch:


And then onto the CAD! My favorite part:

First test print - a piece of the middle ring and a piece of the freak cap, to test out the locking mechanism. I learned a couple valuable things here. My indexing marks were off, and Kinda hard to see. and also I didn't make the locking slot long enough to get a good lock, the cap side was only rotating like a 1/4" in the ring, which didn't feel like enough bite to give me a warm fuzzy.


After a few tweaks, and adding a couple features... Final printing commence!



And Viola! All assembled, with a 14" Redz Pepperstick in there for a test fit:

The center section has a flexible TPU barrel retainer, and a hole through the middle. This lets you open either side of the case and access the barrel regardless of which side you open. 5 inserts accessible from each side, holding a total of 10 inserts. And there is a foam pad on each side of the center ring, to help minimize the rattling of the inserts when it's all closed up.



Aaaaand some print-line-pr0nz..... This is honestly my favorite part of the whole print.
