In the interest of both identifying my tubes from others and being able to find them when dropped I decided I'd give dying my tubes a shot. I had my wife grab some pink synthetic rit dye. From everything I've read and my brief experience I figured I'd start the temp relatively low and work my way up until I saw results.
I ended up using 2 bottles of dye in about 2 gallons of water. I worked the temp up slowly and found that the dye really started to take around 200*f. I let them sit for 20 minutes, taking the lid off to stir and check on my progress every 5 or so minutes.
Out of pure curiosity I tried dying some of the smoked out empire tubes to no avail, somehow the classic clear ones ended up a more orange/red color than pink. I only had the 6 clear tubes, but I tossed some on my Xmas list and am gonna try out some other colors and patterns using a hot glue gun after the new years.
