So finally got around to roughing some wood grips in for my Niche 86 slider frame. The frame polish and anno are very nice but super slick and the panels are flat with no palm swell. Weight of my slap sided cocker requires a bit more meat and texture on the grip to comfy and secure. Here is my first attempt with some Russian olive wood that I cut for firewood a year or so ago. Using a cheap belt sander with a course belt and an old cheap scroll saw. Traced the outline and screw holes from the aluminum panels. Holes lined up perfect on one grip but I had to slightly oval one hole on the other panel. Goes on nicely now.
Think I’m going to try to blend in the contour more on the spine to taper down some more. Also going to try to match up to the frame finger grooves somewhat on the front side.
Overall I’m pretty happy with my first attempt for about the last 2 hours. Longest time was trying to rip a couple consistent panel then sand it flat on one side. Once traced I cut a bit away from the pencil lines and then contoured with the belt sander.
Will update more as I continue shaping.
