Seriously though, I've only seen Dune(1984) and the TV mini-series(2000). Still need to checkout the newest version.

        Saw it last night.

I can see how some would find it dull. I found it a bit slow in places, but definitely enjoyed it overall. The art direction, cinematography, score and acting were all fantastic.

It's one of those films that needs to be enjoyed on a massive screen with a massive sound system, or in VR as a second best option. Watching it on my friends 43 inch TV didn't really do it justice. (There are no theatres open here. We're still deep in lockdown)

I never read the books. Watched it this evening. My take:

I thought it was pretty good. Great visuals, though I thought the lighting was excessive at times. The characters were varied and interesting for the most part. There were a couple slow-ish spots, but nothing I couldn't get over. My only real/constructive complaint is that there wasn't much context or information, and I was left wondering "why?" and "how?" a lot. I get it's a sizable franchise and stuff gets cut when making a movie about it. But I felt I didn't get enough basic information to help become really invested in what's going on. For instance, WHY is the spice this super valuable commodity? HOW does it contribute to space travel? The main commodity everyone wants never seemed to even become established as a thing of interest to me. I kind of wish I read the books before watching it just for the basic info.

Overall, I think this was a good "part one". Because it's a first part I feel I can forgive some of it's shortcomings. In LotR, The Fellowship wasn't the best of the three but it was critical for setting up the rest of it. This first installment of Dune was OK, but I'll have higher expectations of the next one. I just hope it helps me better understand the hows & whys and maintains my interest. Or maybe I'll just try reading the books.

"Thinking machines" are banned and severely taboo in their universe. People with highly evolved and specialized mental abilities are needed for certain tasks, navigating faster-than-light spaceships being one of them. The Spice is essential to these abilities. Without it, space travel becomes impossible.

MrBarraclough So basically computers are taboo & you need a dude with psychic abilities to get coked up & fly your ships?

Yup, that's pretty succinctly it. The Spice is more or less petroleum and cocaine rolled into one.

Fair assessment overall. The WHY and HOW here were explicitly covered ... in a voice over. Weak and lame considering it's the main plot point of the entire series. It's of no surprise if most people miss the importance of that voice over. They didn't even depict the navigators... I mean, that's the part of it that really stuck with me over the years as to the importance of the spice as a universal commodity.

I mean, I heard the voiceover... but even with that, I didn't get it. It didn't hook me and make me think. Well, I had to think about it, but that was to try and figure it out in the first place. I dunno. It was a good movie overall, but I think I'm going to have to read the books to completely understand it.

I saw the movie in IMAX and liked it enough that it encouraged me to give the book a shot again - because I have found I am not a fan of Frank Herbert's writing. Someone suggested I give it a 150page chance . . . I can do that, I am used to (and like) Neal Stephenson novels, and they often can take 300pages of setup.

I think this new movie compares favorably to the David Lynch treatment from 1984. I remember seeing that in the theaters as a kid and liking it a lot

You ever have a date with a beautiful woman that you couldn't wait to be over?

That was Dune for my wife and I.

It was great to look at. The world building is exceptional. I would compare it to Fury Road in those aspects.

I didn't care. The characters were flat. I wasn't into the hero's, I didn't despise the villains. There was little emotional gravity to the story telling.

Now, I have not read the source material, nor seen the 1984 film.

I don't care if there is a sequel.
