optometrists aka "why i loathe getting new glasses"

im sure im not the only person here with glasses

curious about what your guys options are about some of these things

i wear glasses, but didnt start until i was in my late 20's

i noticed i had some astigmatic issues when i was in my early 20's (double text on high contrast lettering) but it was never bad enough that i couldn't "just deal with it"
even after getting glasses, i still dont wear them all the time, especially when its daytime. i do just fine, i can see everything fine, its just not as clear as it COULD be
i can function just fine with no glasses, im not bumping into crap like mr.magoo.. i can read without them..i can play paintball without them (though if the shell isnt brightly colored, the ball is pretty much impossible for me to track after 10 feet)

problem is, i tend to have an issue with optometrists.. maybe its my getting frustrated with them over my lack of being able to explain what my issue is.. maybe its because some of these guys have all of the "bedside manner" of a salt shaker

last pair of glasses was like 5 years ago, after the second remake, i settled on a script that was a good balance of "square things not being round (astigmatism correction)" and i can read small text with them.. and i always feel like i gotta fight with these guys about the script that they want o give me, and the script that doesn't screw with my ability to see the world

i even explained that on my most recent visit.. that "i tend to prefer the cylinder correction to be dialed back a bit because it changes shapes of things, and i find it very distracting"
this guys answer "you know how you fix that?, wear your glasses all the time"
like i said.. i tend to not like optometrists..

im using the script that this guy wrote for about 24 hours.. i cant say i like it, every-time i turn my head the "wave" of everything moving around my peripheral vision is really distracting. and my eyes hurt from focusing.. and trying to look ant anything not directly in front of me SUCKS

i go lenscrafters for my prescriptions because i can get the lenses remade until im happy with them

but having to go back every-time and argue with them because their professional opinion doesn't mesh with my personal preference sucks. and its a huge contributing factor to why i dont like getting new glasses and put it off for 5 years

does anyone else have these problems? or is it just me

I'm near sighted and have astigmatism in one eye. I usually don't have a problem with optometrists until they get ready to do the glaucoma test. My eyes start blinking like crazy. My last exam was in Feb and I went to America's Best. They didn't argue with me about anything but I'm also near sighted enough to need to wear my glasses pretty much all the time

I don’t know how much my issues mirror yours, but for me the “getting used to it” Thing has some merit. Switching to no-line bifocals and adjusting to a fluid bubble behind my retina both initially sucked rocks. After a period of about a month, my visual cortex figured our how to deal with the new inputs and the issues disappeared, even though I can still perceive them if I try to see them. Vision is wierd, it’s optics, biology, perception and neurology all rolled into one. Hope you find something that works for you.

I wore glasses from ages 2-8 then again from 16 to present. I still vividly remember putting on my glasses at 16 and getting dizzy because the world was so clear for the first time in months. I haven't had to get an adjustment in a few years now. That said my main issues were astigmatism and a lazy eye. The lazy made it that I had to have prism ground in my one lens which makes it a pain to get new glasses. That said the problem because of the prism seems fixed so I'm looking at contacts this time around. That said I feel you on it being sucky to have to explain to someone that you don't like how the glasses make things look and them telling you TFB deal with it.

As an astigmatic, I hate to tell you, but wearing your glasses all the time will in fact fix the distortion. I always deal with that for maybe a week after a new prescription.

Samesies. Feels like I'm looking into a fishbowl for a few days after I get a new prescription.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

I've been nearsighted since I was in middle school, funny cause any point behind that I just thought everyone had the same trash sight as me, at first I hated glasses but now I'm in a spot where I'm contemplating(and most likey will get lasik) and I'm already feeling a sense of sadness in not wearing glasses I've worn them daily for close to 16 years

Yup. My eyes are bad enough that I want to wear them all the time. I'm not gonna run into walls or anything like that, but I sure wouldn't drive without em. And I couldn't hit squat on the field

Pretty sure you need to wear them more. I have similar issues, astigmatism and extremely near sighted, 20/425
I am not a Walmart fan, but it by far is the easiest to deal with for optometrists and getting what you like.

You can return glasses no questions asked and pick something else out. I just did it for the first time beginning of the year.
I liked my new glasses and always have the dwell where you think they don’t work like you old ones until you get used to them,
The problem was they looked good but would not stay adjusted I tried for three weeks, kept getting adjustments and after a few days sliding down my nose.
Picked out another set and these have been perfect. Besides the 20/425, and astigmatism I also wear bifocals.

After 28 years of single vision correction I went to bifocals in 2017.

It took me a bloody year to get used to them, and I wear them all the time.

I know the suggestion you need to adept sounds like crap, I felt that way too. But I was wrong.

Tracker, I am in the same boat as you. Had the exact same problem, took the pair back many times (they actually screwed it up the first few times), but even after, the world is slanted. What I don't understand is that my glasses from high school, 20years ago, do exactly what I want. They are way out of style, though.
