If you can hide them, go for it. Much more comfortable in the hand, if not the waistband.
Make sure you have a good belt. Ones specifically sold as a gun belt are more likely to be good and stiff; when I bought mine, I could hold it outright. Now it's settled into more of a curve.
Me, I can't hide anything bigger than a 1911, but that's because I'm not a big guy. I'm the heaviest I've ever been, nearing 150. My Ruger SR9c sits well enough, and fit alright twenty pounds ago.
