Earnest Cheese, the silly movies that actually try

So tonight I rewatched, for I think the 5th time, the movie Real Steel. A movie with a down right silly concept, an underdog story of a robot boxer paired with a fairly predictable broken family narrative, but done with absolute earnestness. No cutting corners on budget, none of the actors phoning it in, no ironic winking at the camera. A movie that knows it's cheese, but it WILL try it's hardest to make it work.

A rather cynical friend of mine who was watching with me actually said, "How am I getting emotionally involved with a stupid robot? How?"

I need more. More movies with a cheesy premise, but they actually try to make it good. Earnest Cheese. So, what are your favorites?

        Stark Raving Mad.
Sean William Scott, bank heist covered up by a rave, with National Geographic references. Need I say more?

Anna & the Apocalypse is great for this. Zombie Movie + Musicals but the story actually gets kind of dark and serious and it's REALLY well done. The trailer makes it look like just Shaun of the Dead plus music but it's really not.

My go-to is still pretty much anything with Gary Busey.
They're rarely good, but often they put a lot of work into the schlock. And Busey is always a safe bet--you're never more disappointed than you expect to be.

A single movie, though? I'm still a fan of the Mario Bros. movie.
Is it good? Ehh... Does it belong in the Mario Bros. canon? Oh hell no. But it has some memorable moments ("Sir, the goombas are dancing again" is a running line in my gang) and it's actually not that bad if you see it as just another Fifth Element wannabe from that era.

I gotta recommend Cool as Ice, starring Vanilla Ice. It's soooo bad that it's good. The best part is it really tried hard to be a "hip" film. Bad puns, random hip-hop dance sessions, and Memphis Style art everywhere. It's ridiculous.
