I've never understood why marching like this is a benefit whatsoever or anything military-related.

Other than maybe instilling discipline; it isn't. Just a Potemkin show of force like the goofy videos you get out the DPRK etc of guys lined up doing martial arts shirtless in the middle of winter. Just something for their apologists and twitter bots to share around.

One purpose of marches like these (Pass in Review) is for the unit to show to their superiors that they are operating in good condition (proper fitness and hygiene, proper uniform and weapon care, etc.). Of course, big national events like this are also meant to show the rest of the world the same. In the right context, formal, military marches can aid in unit cohesion and, morale (i.e., pride in your unit). Having X number of properly equipped people capable of marching (i.e., deploying) in a moment's notice is one aspect of a military's strength. While this is barely above the most basic level of readiness, it has never been shown to be a guarantor of capability in actual combat. In other words, it's foundational-level stuff that must be built upon in other ways and if not, then your military will fail in combat no matter how well they march.

If you carefully march in lockstep while retreating across a bridge, it can be very hard for someone to follow you across the same bridge... it can also make it harder for the second half of your arms to follow you across the bridge.Feedback
