Launched a new side business today

With the strikes work has been pretty slow for my day job so I've been tinkering with an idea I've had for a while now. Been a long-time F1 fan but I never really bought merch because I hate wearing sponsor logos and the few things I bought was terrible quality.

    So I made my own!

Leaning heavily into a lot of memes and internet culture around F1 but if you're into it gives us a look! Tried to keep the prices pretty reasonable and we're using really high quality shirts so they feel great too.

    We're called Spin the Tires

if you’re having trouble getting quality F1 merch you may be buying pirate junk. The team stuff is literally worn by the teams and that’s pretty much always good stuff, just profoundly pricey.

Where’s the Bernie in Jail gag? I have the Bernie hand puppet and would love another one in prison wear.

Is the Stroll joke that he’ll always have a job no matter how much he sucks because his dad owns the team or something else?

I’ve been an F1 fan since the 80s but I can’t stand Drive to Survive or Facebook so I guess I don’t get most of these.

Very cool. Not into F1 myself but know it’s real hot right now and always respect a good side biz hustle.

Love the Kimi quote. Was in the paddock when they interviewed him in Austin following terrible qualifiers, right after that fuel flow thing that ruined Ferrari's season (2016?). The interview was... as expected.

I've bought from basically every team doing market research leading up to this haha. Basically the shirts that the teams wears with the sponsor logos and everything are good quality because they have to wear that. But then you look like a Nascar driver. Pretty much any other shirt they sell that is a more "normal" one you'd wear out is pretty poor quality or has other issues.

Just a couple things we ran into:
          • Super inconsistent sizing - A Mclaren 2X shirt looked like a crop top on me and perfectly fit my M-wearing sister.
          • Poor Quality - Williams button-up had the button fall off when I opened the package, and I got a t-shirt where the sleeves were different lengths. Very on-brand haha
          • Cheap Materiel - A LOT of the shirts are just heat transfer vinyl which doesn't hold up well long term and feels like something someone made on a cricut at home.
Generally the teams who have PUMA as their clothing supplier had pretty decent stuff, and Haas had some German company whose shirts were outstanding. Hamilton's personal line is nice but has a very specific aesthetic I know a lot of friends aren't into. Daniel Ricciardo's personal line is probably the best of the stuff we bought, but it better be for the price they charge.

A lot of the shirts are based on radio calls that have been memed, Leclerc's "I am stupid" crash in Baku, Alonso's comment on the Honda engine, couple different Kimi quotes. The Stroll one is a reference to a promo video they made last year I think were the drivers tried to name all the WDC's and at the end Stroll said Stroll 22, Stroll 23, Stroll 24. So playing off that combined with daddy owning the team haha. May just keep updating that shirt every year if it sells ok.

            These are really cool.

Every year after COTA I tell myself I'm going to make fishing shirts with F1 flair.

It's always balls hot, not enough shade and while I look like an idiot with my bright blue long sleeved fishing shirt and chilabra, I am setup to weather the whole day without sun burn or over heating.

Oh man seriously, I went through SO much sunscreen at COTA last year lol.

The all-over print shirts we're doing are actually great for that. They're UPF30 and super lightweight, perfect for that kinda track day. Only downside is they're a very athletic slim fit so if you're on the chubbier side like me it's not a very flattering shirt haha. Still trying to find a vendor with a similar quality that can does boxier shirts in that materiel.

When I was in Austin the Westboro Baptist church was there. They had some memes of their own…signs with helmeted sodomite cartoon F1 drivers bonking each other and language I can’t repeat here. That stuff would make some hilarious T shirts right up until someone kicked your ass for wearing it.

Drive to Survive has had mixed reviews for sure.
Full disclosure; i really like it, but with that being said i know its a reality tv show and there nothing more fake than reality tv lol

they add drama where there is none and focus more on the people rather than the sport.

with that being said though, F1 was never a thought in my head before the show. i now find myself watching reviews of races, rule and reg change break downs, and new tech displays. the show got me interested in the idea of F1. its always in the back of my mind that the show takes some liberties though.

i remember watching old Top Gear in the early 2000's and seeing Lewis Hamilton in the "star in a reasonably price car" segment. there were a few drivers actually. its cool to see where they are now.

Drive to Survive serves a similar purpose for growing US fandom as what crappy tabloids and Sky pre/post shows do in the UK. It accelerates interest in the non-interested.

If you show a race with the fastest cars in the world on TV a lot of people don’t care. It’s just not enough. You explain that those two guys are brothers or that dude there was banned for life, etc then people care. You put those guys in a bounce house or a peanut pushing contest and your mom is a fan for life, never mind the cars.

F1 is an absolute freak show of excess and disfunction so I expect Drive to Survive to outlast actual F1. F bombs are way cheaper than tires after all…let’s hope for 100 seasons…Guenther Steiner’s head in a jar still talking S about his drivers in the 22nd century…

I was always drawn in by the engineering, probably because as a kid growing up in the US with an almost total lack of F1 coverage most of what I learned about the series came from books and magazines…still images, and nobody cared what drivers said back then. Hamilton is probably the first successful driver I actually liked and cheered on. I supported back markers and such for personal or professional reasons but LH was the first guy I wanted to see win a crown and it was very thrilling at the time. I guess now that you can’t see what’s in the cars anymore I’m bound to pay attention to the drivers.

when i watch cartoons, i dont get mad because they are fake... i watch them because they are entertaining and am fully aware that they are not real.
i watch D2S because its entertaining knowing full well that its fabricated and manipulated. would i ever go to a race? probably not lol. but what i would do is leave the channel on the race to see the race the episode was but from.
it might just be enough of a seed for some people to get into the sport (the actual sport and not just the drama).

it might even create enough of a market to make F1 apparel popular.

                    or

maybe its just a show and it will always be just a show. maybe people will go to a race thinking they are going to see the drama and hear the f bombs and get disappointed when its not at all what they saw on netflix lol (strong possibility)

It got people talking about F1 though; so thats something i guess.

Side topic, but what's the hate for D2S? It's entertaining, and it's a good intro for people who can't follow all the news throughout the year.

The "canned" drama thing? Anyone who's competed, worked in product development, or dealt with sponsors knows its a wild ride. There are periods of calm, and moments of pure chaos. I think it's pretty close to legit, there just happen to be editors focusing on the juicy bits, and a bunch of "personalities" having some fun to try to make it less tedious. It's not meant to be a well-rounded view... is it?

Reasons I don’t like the show…the friggn Avengers soundtrack they’re playing all the time that adds massive bass punches to every crash, word, weather report, anything. Too much coverage of the crappy “American” team and it’s crap talking loser of a boss. Making massive plot lines out of pointless speculation. Also the coverage of the races themselves is very bad. It’s basically exactly what my girlfriend watches all day but with F1 licensing.

Fair points - especially on Haas. It is clear they're trying to develop the US market, and probably figure the gearheads already know about it.

The show has definitely brought more eyes to the sport, but I would not consider it an accurate documentary with any real chronological order.

Personally I'd just rather consume the races and the auxiliary content from various creators I enjoy.

I've watched F1 for almost 20 years now, and it speaks volumes to me that the first time my girlfriend took any interest in it was after we watched the over-dramatized "documentary".
