I think the franchise would have more success with that, or doing an offshoot with crossovers (call it OHMSS, or something). No change has to become a problem for anybody, if it's done right.
On the surface, it looks like a woke thing, though.

-This. Making a "female 007" makes it a feminist thing, co-opting or taking over a traditionally male role- and what's today considered a fairly 'toxic male' role. That taints the movie from the start- just like when Marvel tried making a female Thor and a female Iron Man, etc. The aforementioned Ghostbusters did just that- all they did was tell the same story, except they swapped the guys for gals- and assumed it was supposed to work under that premise alone.

However, if you made a "female 00 agent", and gave her her own backstory, motivation and plot, that stands a better chance of working. Audiences in general have no difficulty with solid female protagonists- Ripley from Aliens, Trinity from The Matrix, Salt, etc.- but audiences DO, and has been well-proven by now, have an issue with a traditionally-male role being simply genderswapped. The aforementioned Thor crashed and burned, as did the Ghostbusters and a few other examples.

And it has nothing at all to do with sexism- it's the character. The latest Superman versions didn't sit well because those Supermen weren't the traditional character. Supes isn't supposed to be a dark and gritty, emo manboy, he's supposed to be an upstanding superhero. You don't hire Danny DeVito to play Superman, or Macaulay Culkin to play Thor- they don't fit the character.

It's the same game here. 007 has been a male role since what, 1964. That's what audiences want. The Bond franchise has been wildly successful because of it.

Why NOT make a female 005 or 006 or 008 or 003? You can keep the exact same premise, the same MI6/Q-Division/M schtick, hell, give her a restored DB5 to drive! But now she's her own character, the audience has fewer preconceptions and the movie has a better chance. (Assuming all-else-being-equal cinematography. Naturally nothing can save a movie that's just bad to start with.)

Grew up loving Lt. Ripley as a kid, plenty of respect for womens in action movies.

I don’t mind trying a female bond either. What I’m afraid of is a bad movie. The latest Star Wars was garbage but it really had nothing to do with a female lead. They they were just shit movies. Sometimes I think these studios pull the diversity card, knowing they can shove it down the populace’s throat and if anyone doesn’t like your crap movie, well *huff* you’re a racist. Another example was Ghost Busters reboot. It would have been great if it was actually a good movie (which it wasn’t).

This is the first I’m hearing of this, and generally I am not a fan of cancel culture or the idea of “toxic masculinity,” but I don’t believe this applies. I only bring that up because I’m sure there will be a handful of folks arguing thats why Bond should be female, as much as the other side arguing that Bond needs to be male because that’s how it’s written.
However, since technically Bond is just an agent, 007, and we’ve already seen 006, I don’t see a reason why 00X can’t be portrayed by a female. Jane Bond? We may need to revisit the name thing.
The one thing I do fear is that maybe we are seeing a female Bond because of the culture where everyone needs to get everything and she won’t be a dick grabbing, one night stand having, suave lead. (Or vagina grabbing, I don’t discriminate.)

tl;dr 007 can be either gender, so long as they don’t change the overall character.

It doesn't bother me that a woman got the role; if she is the best fit for the story then great and I hope she blows it out of the water. What bothers me is shoehorning a someone into a role to try and be PC, or diverse, or appeal to a certain demographic just because. The Wonder Woman / Ghostbusters analogy pretty much sums it up. Make a good movie and people will enjoy it regardless of who is the lead. Make a crap movie and well...

Agreed. I have no issue with a female 007... But it needs to be done right. Diversity for the sake of diversity is simply wrong. I hope she & the writers do a good job, but I'm very skeptical of the whole thing.

I'm also a fan of going with the source material, in which James Bond was a white male. So this kinda reminds me of the whole Ghost in the Shell/ScarJo thing. But in reverse. She took way too much crap for that despite what the source material says or implies. Shit can go one way but not the other... And this is why I don't pay much attention to Hollywood.

But the simple fact is, Superman isn't black. Again, it's not a racial/racist thing, it's a character thing. The character has always been a white Kansas farmboy, since what, 1938? It'd be like casting Idris Elba for the lead in a movie about Winston Churchill- or to swap things around, casting Ryan Reynolds for the lead in a movie about Ray Charles.

Speaking personally, I'd love to see a female 00 agent. Done right I think it could be a fun twist to the series. But again, why make her 007? Isn't the proposed storyline supposed to be something like the male 007 has been lost, presumed kidnapped, etc? Soinstead of making a "new 007", why not have M activate 006 or 008 or even the fabled, unbeatable spoken-only-in-hushed-tones 001 to go rescue him.

Why even have 007 anywhere in the movie? Have a female 005 wind up fighting the daughter/granddaughter of Blofeld or something. I know it seems odd to ask for creativity in the modern cinema, but why not give it a shot?

The Marvel Universe movies worked, and worked extremely well, in no small part because the actors were cast to fit the existing character- Captain America was a muscular blonde guy, Iron Man was a playboy with alcohol issues, the Black Widow was a redheaded woman, Spider-Man was a geeky teen, etc. The whole series would not have been anywhere near as popular if they'd cast Gal Godot as Captain America, Michael Clark Duncan as Thor, Haley Joel-Osmont to play the Black Widow, and Halle Berry as Spider-Man.

The only reason I can think is that they wanted to movie to be called 007 and get the full impact of the franchise. I think it is a gamble. I hope they make a good movie, instead of tank the franchise.

Most importantly I hope there isn't some useless Q that laughs at the idea of an exploding pen, meanwhile james bond is constantly unarmed and always needing a way out of a sticky situation that would readily be remedied by a handy explosive pen or literally anything besides an iphone, which is what Q provided james with.

Hopefully Q gets 007 some good equipment for smashing bad guys this time.

Just make it good. That gets missed by Hollywood far too often. In between hiring mega-stars and paying for the biggest flashiest effects, they often forget to pay their writers to be good.

Pretty clear to me that 007 is just a number, Bond has just been the only one we have ever seen/heard to have it. The number goes into rotation, she is the next to pick it up, she will be her own spy. She won't "be" Bond. But having the number assigned to her gives writers the ability to give name recognition to the movie and not confuse people.

Everyone always hates when they announce a new bond. People hated Daniel Craig, people were hating the idea of Idris Elba or Henry Cavill, people are gonna hate her. But like many have mentioned, what matters is if the movie is GOOD. Hard to keep hating the main actor/actress if the movie ends up being awesome.
