I have driven three on the tree from at least three different manufacturers. I still have a Chevy and two Dodges out at tge farm. If there us much slop they can lock in gear. Fun driving the last several miles to school locked in first. (Plymouth station wagon with manual transmission slant 6. Old road signs for rear floorboards.)

my 2019 Crosstrek has a 6spd manual. I love it, makes driving more interesting. the 2010 Outback it replaced had a CVT and I found it a perfectly cromulent transmission. I really don't have a love or hate relationship with the mechanical bits of what make my cars go, so long as they stay functioning.

My 79 Midget isn't on the tree but finding reverse is always fun for first time drivers. Lifting up the stick and going up and over isn't obvious. I don't miss having a stick on my everyday driver but I do like driving stick when just cruising.

VW and BMW both have similar reverse patterns. On my Jetta reverse is down and to the left, and I've driven some BMW where it is up and to the left. Easy once you know- but the first time it is weird.

I was taught how to drive stick when I was 15. learned how to use a 3 on the tree style shifter as well. That said it is the most PITA way to shift and whoever invented it can burn in hell.

That in mind I don't give a rat's about what using a manual. Autos are faster and with paddle shifting if I want to manually shift up or down I can. In the modern world manual is dead.

Growing up we only had manual transmission cars. I learned to drive on a manual '88 Corolla and only this year did I buy an automatic car. I have a '19 Camry with a non-CVT automatic transmission and it's super weird to get used to, but I like it a lot and it's very efficient. My wife drives a '17 Crosstrek with a 5-speed so I still get to play around with it if I get the itch.

I feel the same way about CVT/auto as I do about Emeks. They're great, but I don't care for them.

I know what it is but have never driven one. Current ride is a 5-speed TDI Jetta though. The only reason I would want to drive anything else is if I had to sit in traffic. Riding 1st gear starts to suck after about 10 minutes...

1978 Chevy 350 Van. Awesome van. Hot cup of coffee in one hand (only cup holder was putting it between your legs), a cigarette in the other and shifting hoping the power steering holds until your done shifting, it liked to just randomly stop working then start again. the good ole' days....

1- This isn't really condescending, its certainly not the "millennial anti theft device" meme ( Which as A genx'r I find pretty funny but would annoy me if I was a young punk like you )

2- NOBODY is clinging to 3 on the tree. If there is anyone nostalgic for that type of transmission they should be hauled out back and shot

3- This is literally a website 3/4's filled "with old people constantly clinging to their obsolete inferior technology", is this your first day here?

The last line in my post was an attempt at a joke along the lines of #3, though I admit the execution was sloppy

I love old tech, plus I passed my road test in 78 driving a 52 Ford Mainline with 3 on the tree.

I've driven my share of worn out haggered 3-on-duh-tree cars and trucks. I have a '62 D100 right now with one. It will not be for long. You best have your rose colored glasses on to truly reminisce about that particular method of fumbling through gears. Lets be real, if you were in high school with a 3 on the tree you were in the wrecking yard looking for whatever flavor 4-speed you could find for your ride. A Hemi-Box, a Rock Crusher, or a Toploader... Maybe if you were a little touched you'd buy a Hurst floor shifter for your 3-speed.

I prefer my own brand of outdated tech. Powerglides and TH400's. 🤣

I love cars so I definitely want to try a colum mounted manual transmission. I want to try a motorcycle too, FEET SHIFTING

Shifting on a motorcycle is actually pretty easy. All your shifting stuff (clutch and such) are down one side and brakes on the other. Pull in the clutch click the gear shift lever up with your toe and then smoothly release the clutch, same goes for downshifting. Nice thing is many bikes have a dash mounted dial that shows you what gear you're in too which is nice as lots of bikes even 5-6 years ago didn't have it so you had to constantly remember.

My first vehicle at 19 was a Wrangler, 94 straight 6, manual. Still own it, will never let it go.

manual is my preferred method of driving.
                        Im in my early 30's
Ive driven 3 on the tree, 4 on the floor, 5, and 6 speeds as well.

absolutely love a good manual car.

My problem is that i hate the newer manual cars. i believe the auto industry and emission standards have killed the manual car. They are no where near what they used to be. DBW, anti stall, throttle lag, and rev hang all but killed the manual car. Thats why i bought a manual car from 2001... lol

even though there are still manual cars, the manuals have long died. Gone are the days of heal-toe'ing into a corner, bumping the revs while downshifting, and a smooth transfer all the way through.

the only dumb feature I found on my crosstrek was their software hill control that would hang on the brakes for a brief moment when you let off the clutch. it was ... dumb. I was hoping for the vintage subaru hill holder clutch from waaaaaaaayy back when, where when you wanted to have that function you pressed the brake in HARD while the clutch was engaged, then took your foot off the brake and the clutch was all you needed in. it was mechanical, it was brilliant, it was when you wanted it. the software shit was just annoying and made starting off from any stop not smooth at all. I disabled that crap and at some point I will put some tape over the dumb dash warning light that stays lit because it is turned off. the 6spd the car has is smooth shifting. a lot of the other crap you mention is in part because rotating mass is so much less in modern cars. in the past you'd have some massively heavy flywheels and their inertia alone took care of the anti-stall/rev hang/etc.
