    Garage Shelving / Storage!

Well, short story IS - my flippin' wall mounted shelves came crashing down recently due to the previous home owner not properly installing anchor points to the wall studs! I've already made the home depot online mistakes with a couple poo poo floor standing shelves that were bad, and shipping companies like to destroy things en route to me ha ha.

Anyone have any GOOD experiences with any floor standing shelves? I'm looking for actual steel construction throughout - no flimsy press board inserts if that makes sense. I may hire a carpenter to deal with this and refurb. the whole thing properly. That could get expensive though

I've been a fan of the DeWalt shelves/racking with the composite press board inserts. They have inserts but they do have a support in the middle and I actually use mine to hold my mill and my lathe but I do have long pieces of T-slot aluminum to spread the weight of the mill out.

I also have some commercial grade wire racking shelves in the garage that have held up well for 16+ years. Try a commercial kitchen or industrial supply store/catalog.

Beyond that...most of the shelving/racking I have experience with requires a forklift, though we have some pretty bad forklift drivers and many people have gotten to take bent racks home and cut the bad sections out.

Feels like there could be liability issues allowing employees to bring home damaged racking. We cut our damaged racks up and scrap them out.

Some employees receive more favor than others in regards to taking things home liability or not. I think I spoke wrong when I said “many people ” as its really only about 4 people with very brown noses.

Looked around the work shop. Uline offers some decent all steel shelves. We also have some fiber board topped shelves from global that aren’t too bad. The wood is a bit thicker as well as the cross braces. They don’t tend to sag like our fastenal shelves and I’m not a global fanboy by any means.

if you don’t ever need to move them by yourself and have room for swinging doors then stronghold cabinets might be nice

Looks like you beat me to it on the Uline suggestion!

What sort of carrying capacity are you looking for here? My go-to, since I've been able to afford it, is NSF shelving. They support several hundred pounds per shelf, and can easily convert between stationary or mobile shelving. Where I live, Costco, Lowes, and Home Depot offer NSF shelving - and I've bought ~8 racks from Home Depot because they offer the best price for the coated variant which provides better corrosion resistance. The brand name is Trinity if memory serves but it's never listed as such on the Home Depot website.

edit: to add, you can top the wire shelves with any surface material you like (plastic, wood, nothing...) since you can bolt sheet material to it. For shelves where I place boxes, I don't put anything over the wire. For shelves where I place loose items, I generally prefer the rubber sheets they sell just for NSF shelving as it keeps items from sliding around and wipes clean - but it isn't safe for oils and such, so for a garage you might consider polyethylene instead (HDPE, UHMW, etc)

If you’re looking for heavy duty, all steel construction, and if you’re willing to spend some money you could install pallet racking or something similar.

Under $500 would be nice. Really it's about quality for me. I'm looking for a carpenter now to put the old setup back together properly. I think that will work best for me

I jumped on the current social media trend and built these, dirt cheap, insanely sturdy, and built it all in an afternoon. And everything that went into a bin was logged on a Google doc so I can search it and find out immediately what bin it’s in.

I standardized all my shelves to this style.
You can adjust the shelf as needed and they make cover and protection if needed.

These are all great ideas, thank you all very much! I love that wooden contraption that holds the plastic bins! As for my weight requirements - I dunno exactly, just sturdy enough to hold a lot of my junk ha ha. More than the cheap shelves can handle. I find that shelves and other spaces tend to attract more and more crap don't you
