I've moved twice in the last two years - one cross country (UT > NC) then a little closer (NC > TN).
I used an Estes Suremove shipping container both times. I highly recommend them for the following reasons.
(1) the price includes up to 3 business days to load and unload.
> This was really nice as I didn't have to rush to load and I could take my time to really maximize my space.
> They don't do drop off / pick up on weekends, so if you have them drop on Wednesday you have 5 days to load and unload.
(2) transit time is about 1 week
> I found this to be perfect in both moves: I took my time driving across the country and could stop to see things on the way.
> They can store your belongings longer for you at extra charge if you want
(3) You don't have to drive a big truck
> driving a moving truck long distances sucks. Less stress.
> no worry about liability or possibility of getting in an accident or something
(4) You get more space than even the largest moving truck. I think it was like 28 ft long and 8 ft high.
(5) you pay by the linear feet used. It's not much more expensive, if at all, than a big moving truck for a long distance move.
> You can somewhat control costs by packing efficiently and you don't have to pay for space you don't use
> It wasn't much more expensive overall than if I had driven a truck - whatever the additional expense was it was worth my time.
(6) If memory serves you either make partial payment up front, or no payment and pay in full after the move. This is nice if you are also waiting on funds from selling your house.
