We bought a Masterbuilt (used) a couple years for next to nothing. Works great for smoking and also perfect for making jerky. I have always been a die hard wood coals smoker advocate in the past but you really have to watch it to be sure it [heat] does not get out of hand. Since going electric life has gotten much easier, I can vary the amount of smoke and tastes just as good. There is enough creosote build up right now I'm not having to add wood chips to get a like smoke. I am firmly in the electric smoker camp now and the Masterbuilt while not the highest quality has done everything I have asked of it.

Lots of people here go Masterbuilt too - they get hooked on the flavor from their competition style offset smokers, then have kids or get a job that takes more of their time and decide easy is better.

The Traeger style (z-grill, too) are almost as easy, and a lot more versatile; some kamado style (Green Egg) smokers now have PID controllers like a Traeger, but they're pretty hard to move around.

I have a Masterbuilt gravity 560. So far I like it a lot. Easy to use and you can add wood chunks in with the charcoal to get your desired smoke.

I have a Masterbuilt I got for free off of Letgo.

Everything that has come out of that box has been great eating.

I don't have the time or the lifestyle to be a snobby, stick burning, monk of the dark vapors. I simply want to make great food. This achieves that goal.

I've had a Traeger for over a decade and never looked back. Have a green egg and hate it as maintaining a stable temp for long periods is a pain especially if you have any wind. Traeger is basically plug and play which helps with versatility.

Sorry to be blunt, but pops is wrong.

I have a cheap chest style (looks like a mini fridge)smoker from Lowes. It's a Pit Boss. The thing works great. If you want more of a grill style, they male those too. My brother has one.
