Was walking 4 miles a day on top of stretching and weight strengthing. Both hips need work and cortisone shots kinda helping. Just wondering how other folks get past the pain. Im 68 and just trying to survive for a while.

Not quite there yet, but my Dad swore by lots of gym work (low impact), minimal sugar, and fish oil every day - both mostly to calm the joints. He maintained that through his 70s.
The main thing for me is sugar which is hell on my joints. I don't touch soda, including diet (cancerous shite) - and rarely touch alcohol.
Another big thing at least in my family has always been bowel cancer. For me that means zero processed meats including ham or bacon, more leaning towards fish and beef a couple of times a week. Otherwise vego. Don't get me wrong I too enjoy watching life drain from the eyes of a bull stag as I chokehold it to the next plane of existence, but it's not my daily.
Third big thing, and the one I'm fairly sure will get me in the end, is heart stuff. Trying to avoid salt where possible. Salt is one of those flavors you adjust to. If you cut it for a while, you can barely eat most packaged snacks because they're so salty. Helps.

While I'm not old, I'm almost 40 & I'm seeing/feeling stuff change with my body. I've gained 30lbs in the past year or so & my endurance is way down. I need to fix that.
Three things I've done in the past that have helped get my butt back into shape was drink more water, cut the sugar, and calisthenics. I feel like those three things can work well at any age.

Less negative outweighs more positive.
Less stress, food, Netflix.
Winning, optimizing, efficiency cause stress.
No trinket can provide the necessary information to allow one to perceive they deserve to eat poorly.(ie. Apple Watch incorrectly calculating calories burned thus creating the false sense of being able to eat “insert item that said person has never thought was the reason for their issues”)
If you are bored, then you have no problems.
The happiness that Netflix brings for 2 hours will not erase the regret for the remaining 22 hours left. 2 more hours of sleep may make the next 24 hours more productive.

I'm thinking long and hard about getting a hip replacement. Regardless if paintball is the driving factor for me, there is still walking swimming, moving stuff, etc. I'm just not patient with rehab. Good thing is that we reached out of pocket for insurance so I may just have to go for it since rehab only does so much. At least I can walk which keeps muscles and everything else going. I wish there was an exersize to improve my sighting but I am happy on what I have accomplished so far in life.

My brother In-Law has had to have both hips replaced (one of them twice because of a design flaw) and after doing his rehab and PT is back to being a professional personal trainer and soccer player. Mark is 65 or 66 and recover when pretty quick. Mark and I have talked about it quite a bit as my left hip socket is borked and will need replacing sometime in the near future. Big thing in recovery is doing the rehab and PT as soon as possible and stay active even after recovered.

motion is lotion
all this talk on hip replacements . . . this year I helped with both my sister and my mom getting hip replacements. my sister's was the worse of the 2, by an order of magnitude. she put it off so long that she had really messed up her pelvis. she had her hip replaced first - while I was out helping with that I took my mom to an appt with her ortho doc and we ended up having quite the argument there (doc told me to leave him out and I said no, too bad) but she relented and got hers scheduled also. Both are up and mobile now - took my sister 5mos to finally not need a cane, mom bounced back in pretty short order. both are doing so much better in overall health because of it, because they can get up and move.
I've got bad back issues - kicking the surgery can down the road with a spinal cord stimulator to block the neuropathic pains. and I have some gnarly arthritis in abused joints in one foot - which thankfully doesn't impact walking. so I walk with a 30lb ruck on nature trails a few times a week. I have found that maintaining stamina is the one way to successfully deal with pain. also lots of epsom salt bathsOriginally posted by Carp

find a way to make exercising (in any fashion) fun. If it's a chore you're not going to stick to it. If that costs some money... pay it
I've really gotten into VR-based fitness, SUPERNATURAL specifically - but people love that or hate it.
I also have a quality elliptical and take in a 30min show while I use it
