With so many of my favorite novels/comics/computer games being utterly slaughtered when being made into TV-series, I don't have any hope whatsoever that this one will be the slightest watchable. In fact, I probably won't even give it a chance, since I personally find is soul-crushingly depressing to see what kind of pathetic attempt to "improve" the original material has been done this time, when the source material was absolutely sterling in the first place.

I fully understand the need to adapt a book/comic strip to fit the film/TV-series format, but it absolutely sickens me to see all the alterations of the main characters' personalities - which was what made them enjoyable, the absurd changing of chronology, just for the bloody sake of it, and the playing out of major plot twists to "subvert expectations"... FFS, the way the plot winded was the f-ing point why the source material was successful in the first place!!!

I agree with both of your statements. However, my statement was more on a broad sense, that in general when a book/comic strip/etc becomes a huge hit it is because of the great plot - which then beggars belief as to why the very plot needs to be changed, when it was the recipe for success in the first place.

Agreed... I've always been firmly in the "book was better than the movie" camp, if I've read the source material.

Whinny main character stopped after the first book FINALLY got interesting and it ended (abruptly). Then it was going to be a 2 year wait for the 2nd book so I abandoned the series and never read anything by Robert Jordan after that. My son in law loves the books but is not excited about the series because of main character changes.....etc. I'll stick to reading and forgo any TV series; hell I hate the MCU because they changed/mashed together too much.

With Amazon hoping for the next Game of Thrones-style hit and fans of epic fantasy eager to see what kinds of larger-than-life scenery, set, and story may be awaiting them, everyone’s wondering how well the series will live up to a pile of expectations almost as high as Dragonmount.

I read this series for the first time over the course of 2 years recently and found the first few books to be entertaining, the Sanderson 3 to be excellent, and maybe one more in the middle was fun. The month after I finished the series the announcement was made that this would be coming to TV and I am pretty excited about it.

I’m separated enough now and was frustrated enough while slogging through, that I have a pretty low bar for caring what all they include in the show. I’ll be happy just seeing the places we came to know in the books as long as the show can produce some good story telling, whether it goes beat for beat with the books or not. I might even prefer the not.

right there with you on the sentiment. i've read "most" of the series 3 times. if i do a full read again, it would take me more than a year.
really hope this is amazing, like game of thrones good.
i read a review and it suggested that some things were "altered" to be "better". let's hope...

I’ll be taking a shot for every time “nenayeve tugged her braid in frustration.” I do hope the show runners pay a little homage to some of the literary shenanigans that Robert Jordan put us through.

Give me an outtake after an episode where we listen to like 10 people internally monologue about their feelings leading up to a big scene. To save several days of the viewers time, the monologues can all happen simultaneously.

Always liked Mat the best. Felt like Jordan got a bit lazy after awhile there: switch character, trope, trope, something, trope, another 15 pages gone. That plus the epic burnout of realizing he wasn't going to finish before he passed was bummer. RIP of course and the highest order but planning your magnum opus on a time scale that would have taken into his 70s was quite ambitious.

Watched the first few episodes. Found myself going back and forth between “what!?” and “noice.”

I am a little surprised at how I felt about the differences. Still into it for now.

SPOILER ALERT - Can someone who has read the books more recently confirm the stupid fact that Perrin killed his pregnant wife on accident? I don't recall that in the book but I was definitely laughing half the time at the first book since it is so ridiculously derivative and cornball. I hope that wasn't just thrown in to make his character more interesting in the TV series because it seems pretty silly.

I like the series though and am super excited for the TV show I would be more than please if they are able to complete the run. It definitely doesn't have GAME OF THRONES vibes though. I guess they tried to make it more disgusting with the white cloak eating a bird and stuff but I don't see it getting GOT love from the masses - though I will do my best to try to like it.

In the book his early demeanor was rather timid. He was much larger and stronger than just about everyone so he moved in a slow, very deliberate manner, which made people think he was mentally slow (which he wasn't). He didn't get married until much, much later in the series, to someone who was still quite alive by series end.

I think a show writer probably read Of Mice and Men too many times.
