    Y'all see the new iMacs?

My daily drive is an almost-eight-year-old un-updatable hackintosh, so I've been holding out for a refresh before replacing it, and here we are. Cannot wait for a super thin 16gb/2tb to replace my increasingly frankenstein-like desktop.

The heaviest thing I need to be able to do is edit HD paintball video, and this will be MORE than up to the task. So excited for a new desktop for the first time in feels-like-a-decade.

Very nice. What are you using for a mouse & keyboard?

It feels crazy that they offer it with 8gb of ram at all.

16gb pretty low but I guess they're efficient.

It will be a great machine for you.

I love the look of them, hope the laptops continue the color trend, I'm due for an update in a year or two.

Still not sure how I feel about the transition to their own chips. Use a lot of industry specific software and a little worried when they drop x86 support it's gonna break a LOT of my workflow or all that software is gonna move to the cloud and become subscription based which will SUCK. Bad enough having to pay for $50/month to Adobe for the rest of my life.

Something happened at Apple lately and everything they make I like. It’s been like a decade of featureless lozenges but they finally are bringing back edges, colors, etc. The iPhone 12 is from my favorite school of design; late 90s Sony, and the new iMac is also.

I'm so torn on Apple products these days. The M1 chips are very impressive, and in terms of overall feel and experience, Apple has always been amazing. The technology has finally caught up with the price, and they really are impressive pieces of hardware. If you're used to the Apple environment, there's probably no convincing you but I will always be an advocate of building your own PC, and frankly, moving away from the Apple and Windows as a whole whenever you can.

The only reason to buy Apple stuff is the overall ecosystem. No sane Mac user cares about chips. High specs come and go. They care about things like integration with Messages, being almost immune from malware, etc. It’s also nice they they make stuff well enough to last too. (I still use my 2008 MacBook for DJ-ing). If someone wants a new machine every year so that exploding heads in Quake get more realistic every year they should stay away from Macs. If you have work to do, and the software you need runs on Mac OS, I recommend that route.

It’s like Snap on On vs Harbor Freight. One does cost way more than the other but it doesn’t mean that it’s better for every job. Overall the world needs both Mercedes and Nissan.

Still love holding Apple stock but it's still PC all the way. The specs seem okay but they always cost a fortune for hardware you can assemble for half the price.

I don’t think I have a computer in the house with more than 16 gigs, lol.

Depends what you're doing but most of the time it doesn't need much RAM. Video editing though, especially 4k requires a massive memory buffer so yeah 128gb of ram is not out of line.

The new imacs will be excellent for 99% of people.

I know that the M1 can encode video at absolute lightning speed, it's wild. But you'll possibly struggle to edit with that small an amount of ram. That said, it really depends on the length of your footage and whether you're ok editing at a lower res. For most basic editing it's fine to scale it down.

I'm waiting until Big Sur is available on iPad Pro as a toggled option (like when you plug in an external screen/mouse/kb) similar to Samsung Dex. They go on and on about how that'll never happen, but Apple are know for saying things will never happen. They'll cave soon enough.

I think that the ram issue is somewhat negated on these machines. The hard drives are basically ram, and I think that the mac system is capable of using it as needed, where the traditional RAM number is not as important as it was in the past.

That is the only way I can explain how these things default ship with 8gb of ram when that was a small amount of ram even 10 years ago for an average computer.

From what I'm reading, as long as you aren't doing something hardcore like 4k video editing, the 16gb is more than enough, because of the new architecture. Reading some benchmarks and such on the minis, which have basically the same config without being all-in-one, one guy basically said 'if you're doing normal work, and maybe some HD video editing, this will be more than enough. if you do like 4k video editing professionally, not for you'. So, should be more than fine.

Clean! Looks good. Apple really need to sell matching monitors, maybe the same but without the chin.
