    Oculus Quest 2...

I’ve really been wanting to give VR gaming a try lately. The PS4 + VR is a little pricey so I’ve been looking at the Quest 2. It really seems like something I’d like. Anyone have any experience with it?

Yeah. What type of experiences are you looking to use it for? Facebook account is required atm, so there's that. Your Steam Library is usable with the Oculus Link Cable if you have or get a beefy PC. I highly recommend Population:One as a first buy.

I had a Quest 1 but sold for two reasons.

1: Facebook account requirement (the amount of data it's sending home even when it's "off" is creepy). Facebook's entire play with VR is to get better at predicting and ultimately influencing human behaviour by having access to not just microphone, but movement and attention and body language etc. data, so you need to be aware of that. Everything you say, look at, interact with is recorded and analysed (there is no true incognito). I found it distasteful. That's why it's so cheap, which in turn locks out most of their competitors who would need to actually make a profit on the hardware. Of course its all closed source so there's no way to know what exactly they do with the data, but no prizes for guessing. They probably also analyse the room you're in, because why wouldn't they.

2: Weight. Neck pain. I played loads of Table Tennis, and loads of OhShape, both for fitness. Both VR sickness proof. Great games and I worked up a huge sweat, but boyo boy did it kill my neck. That might just be because I have bad posture, so YMMV. I hear the Q2 is lighter.

Why would I go back? One word: Hyperdash. That game had me so hooked. The skill ceiling is so high. But I wont until there are other good cheap standalone headsets. Facebook is literally IOI though so that may never happen.

If you ever lose or get your Facebook account banned you lose all your games correct?

Yes, and there are reports of people getting permabanned with no warnings on an account they made specifically for vr and thus never used Facebook with.

Banning means you lose the account and everything purchased in it. That's why I'm passing over oculus, even though I really liked the features of the rift s.

I'm hoping to get a headset later this year, probably reverb G2.

Yeah i knew about the Facebook thing. Not crazy about it but i figured I’d just have the account in order to use the Quest & not do anything else with it. I briefly had an account years ago but it didn’t interest me at all. I didn’t consider being banned & losing games i had paid for. That’s disturbing. I’m mostly interested in the FPS type games. The game that has had me really wanting something is The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners. Vader Immortal, Arizona Sunshine & a bunch of others look good too.

The problem is that accounts made just for VR, or only used for VR, are the ones they ban. The whole reason they are in VR in the first place is to learn more about you and how to manipulate you, so of course they wont be happy if you try to get around the system.

I've never understood how an occoluous can be such a powerful device, when other VR devices require a top end computer.

Because it's subsidised. They don't make a profit on the hardware. They make a profit on your user data. You are the product.

No idea but the fact that it’s a self contained unit that doesn’t have to be tethered to a PC/console is one of the things i like about it.

It has Lower resolution quality than the tethered models (some got battery packs now and can be wireless now) and i think some of the really big games you need the expensive more powerful units

So does the Quest have to verify your Facebook account status every time even to play a game you’ve already downloaded or is it just to buy the games? So if a person were to take their Quest on vacation & they weren’t anywhere with access to WiFi or even a cell signal then it’s basically useless?

As far as I'm aware, it requires internet access.

I got one and I sideloaded with my computer so I can play steam VR wirelessly through virtual desktop. I had an index but I returned it before Valve actually acknowledged they were issues with a thumb sticks not clicking while pressed in directions.

                  Not quite true.

The Quest 2 actually has a resolution and FOV equal to the best headsets available, including wired ones. The tradeoff is in the onboard performance, so the games don't run as high graphics. Wired headsets don't have any onboard performance, they rely entirely on your PC. The Quest needs no PC as everything is built in.

The great thing about the quest though is that you can ALSO use it as a PC headset if you want, wirelessly too. For this reason, it's easily the best VR headset available, period.

The downside is that you need to be cool with Zuckerbook perving at you all the time. Definitely never ever have any private conversations while in VR, even with people who are not in VR. Turn the headset all the way off when you aren't using it, don't just let it sleep. There's also the risk of your account being blocked and you losing everything you've bought.

VR potentially makes "The Social Dilemma" look like round 1 of 10.

I’ve pretty much decided against it for now.

I didn’t get one. I actually bought a PS4 from a guy i was in line behind at GameStop. He was about to trade it in for nothing so i swooped in & snagged it. I picked up a PSVR from another local store. It is very cool. I can definitely see the technological limitations but it’s pretty amazing. After using it, i can’t help but think that VR was the next logical step up for Nintendo after the Wii. They’re normally all about doing something different from Sony & Microsoft too. Maybe they were still gun shy from the Virtual Boy.
