    Microsoft got me...

    The thread about Windows 11 has me feeling like I need to repent. I held out as long as I could... Most of my computers run PopOS, and it's perfectly fine for nearly everything that I enjoy doing on the computer. Many apps are kludgy, sure... Some critical services lack a GUI at all and I had to memorize the CLI...whatever, I can deal.

    Then it comes time to do some simple work like accounting or documenting something and the best I can find is... LibreOffice? I mean, kuddos to the Libre team for their dedication over the years, but MS Office is in another realm of performance at this point. After using dynamic arrays, xmatch, and reading about 'money in excel'... Come on! A man can only resist so much.

    Now that I've bit the bullet I'm realizing just how warm and inviting it is... For less than I pay for 2TB of Dropbox storage just for myself, me and 5 members of my family are each getting the entire Office suite on up to 5 devices each and 1TB of OneDrive storage (6TB total). I'm so frustrated... they got me.

    Its comfy here! Its not even painful anymore when you decide to nuke your PC and start from scratch, everything is in OneDrive so its just a long, luxurious reboot and you're back in business.

      Eh, I've been doing that for years before OneDrive was even on my radar. I will say that of all the cloud services I've used, OneDrive is the only one that competes with Dropbox in my eyes.

        The single first thing I do to a fresh Windows 10 install is to delete One Drive and their stupid ass folder moving bullshit. (I feel very strongly about it)
        Admittedly, it appears that the future of ability to do such things is becoming dimmer....

          I have also had some difficulty running PopOS as a daily when it comes to certain tasks. However, for Microsoft Office, I just use the web version. I'm sure there is a level of functionality lost, but I've never had an issue.

          I also run 2 SSDs, one for each OS since 99% of the games I play use EAC and don't work on Linux. So theoretically I could use Office on the Windows side.

          ​​​​​​​I don't hate Windows, but I do dislike a lot of the practices(all new windows 11 laptops require a webcam??) and will try to keep myself away from using Windows fully until I have to.

            ^ In my own case I have been doing a bit of testing with Ubuntu. I haven't attempted to game on it or anything, but have found that Libre fits the usage needs I have for Word and Excel. I don't care for having to use the browser base of QB and DB...but that is minor stuff that I haven't looked fully into, yet.

              Some people have had success with Microsoft 365 and WINE, but it's hit or miss. I use Libre most of the time, but if I need something formatted to MS standards I usually go web browser.

            Funny. The reason that the browser version doesn't work for me is formatting. Last I checked, it's impossible to even look at custom conditional formatting rules in the browser interface.

              I guess it's just what I'm using it for. I have never actually opened excel, so it's really only .docx that I ever use it for.

              The big problem I'm having right now with PopOS is publishing software. I'm trying to put together a rulebook for a tabletop game, and it's a nightmare coming from InDesign at work and trying to use Scribus or Writer. That said Scribus does everything I want, I just need to learn it...

              But the idea of Windows siphoning off all my usage data... ugh. I'd have to go with the Pro edition for the simple reason of turning that off, but being closed source, there's no way to know whether or not that actually turns it off!

              As they say, ignoring privacy issues because you have nothing to hide is like ignoring free speech because you have nothing to say. It's very important to me, but the gap in functionality isn't small when you move to FOSS.

                Microsoft is great. Compared to new wave social media slimes, microsoft is doing a good job providing useful services.

                Facebook makes me really appreciate microsoft, and apple.

                  There are ways to limit and control the meta data MS collects, but ever since they moved to a "Service" and not an operating system model there will always be some data collection. The simplest way to limit this is simply by turning on Metered Connection and disabling the auto-updates. Just remember to update once in a awhile to stay current, which patches vulnerabilities.

                  If you are trying to prevent sharing data you are in for an uphill battle as everything collects some kind of data these days. I focus on what kind of data is collected and if is worth the effort to limit, and the company doing it, how secure or robust their data protection practices are. I've found most meta-data is not worth the effort to worry over. I do turn off the Active data usage things though, most of the interactive tools which do collect data on You.

                    Honestly, now that I've done some tutorials in Scribus, and seeing as Proton (gaming) is rapidly improving thanks to Valve, I don't really see any good case to move back to Windows. My workflow (video, 3D, concept art, publishing, database stuff) is well covered by free linux apps. And Linux has literally zero problems with data collection given that every app I use is 100% open source, so any data collection is way out in the open.

                    The only real tradeoff is having to put up with apps that feel like decades older versions of what they're copying. That's not always true though. In some cases (Blender) they're actually better than the paid ones anyway. I can handle that.

                    vijil I think the SteamDeck is going to really improve Linux Gaming and potentially encourage EAC compatibility, which is the thing holding it back IMO.
