MSI: DDR5 RAM Will Cost 60% More Than DDR4

Not surprising, it's a new standard, faster speed etc. Give it a bit of time for adoption and it'll come down.

No rush... from what I have seen the initial DDR5 release will be useless to most users. Very high capacity but initially very slow, think high bandwidth for large file transfers.
The real benefit for DDR5 is the lower power requirement and the density. We'll have single stick 64GB modules. Those that need memory will love DDR5, but the rest of us won't really see much improvement to start.

Eventually we should see super high speeds, but realistically we'll be more tied to the new platform and be required to buy up DDR5 rather than seeing this as a new performance jump.

What is interesting to me is with the mega density soon to come RAM Drives will be super easy to setup. 1 step closer to fully memory based systems.

Edit.. as a reference point for basic uses, Games, web-browsing, word docs.. I have a DDR3 system with 24 GB of memory. With 2 games, 8 browsers open, and some other stuff for fun I have never ever gone past 18 GB of memory allocation. Actual usage is often less than an allocated amount (an amount the system thinks might be needed).

Web browsers are notorious for allocating memory, which looks like google is eating up GB's worth of memory, but real usage is much less.
So... 32+ GB systems looks amazing for normal use, but is completely useless for actual consumer use. There are definitely programs that benefit from huge memory pools (photoshop/content creation) but even gaming doesn't use that much.

Most of the video graphics will be loaded into Video memory, with those 8GB+ pools these days, so system ram has much less to do.

the 60% is a misnomer, it will cost 10-20% more than DDR4 did when it was released

some of that is just inflation and the additional trade embargos against some of this stuff now, as well as the continued semiconductor shortage

the reality is a lot more reasonable than the headline makes it sound
