    Sim Racing

    Hey fellas,

For the past few years I've been getting more and more into Sim Racing. I got a g29 on boxing day in 2017(keep your eyes peeled this year as Logitech has "updated" it with a new name: g923) and bought a wheel stand.

A couple months ago my dad and I spent a day building a proper rig. I grabbed a TRD Celica seat out of a junkyard Celica, and Bought some plywood and 2x4s. This is what we came up with:

Just a single monitor setup, some cheap logitech speakers. The biggest 'upgrade' was actually the inverted pedals. Even with the stock potentiometer they feel massively better.

Eventually I want to upgrade to a CSL Elite bundle with a load cell, but for now this works great.

I race in Assetto Corsa in the SRS leagues, currently competing in the zerobandwidth MX5 series. I also participate in 2 monthly Endurance races in GT Sport.

    Any other simthusiasts on here?

Nice setup. I could see where a couple of small monitors to either side would help a lot with the "mirrors", particularly in Assetto. It's a VERY realistic game/sim and I don't have the talent to get past the "lower high end". The open wheel cars and such require more skill than I have. It likely doesn't help that I prefer to use a controller. I haven't used a wheel since the early days but just never cared for it much.

What's the rig this is running from?

My personal work/gaming setups consist of (2) rigs. One is the "office and game" machine, and the other is the streaming and game machine located in the living room. The second one is all the step down parts as I upgraded the first one...both of them on Ryzen 7 and GTX1080. I tend to enjoy the more arcade style driving games and have really enjoyed the NfS titles...I wish Heat wasn't so broken. It would also be cool if you could PC that really good Xbox one without using the Xbox (or with a respectable frame rate). In truth I think my favorite driver was the Gran Turismo series on PS.

My gaming rig isn't anything to write home about.

      8gb ddr3
      Fx8350
      Gtx1070

I was hoping to upgrade this year to a ryzen build but lost my job due to the pandemic.

I cant run ACC or AMS2 with this setup, but eventually.

Honestly even a cheap wheel is orders of magnitude better than a controller for the finer inputs needed for sim-racing. Gran Turismo, Forza, etc. are made for livingroom racers and therefore handle controller input better.

Not to say you can't run controller, but I think it's worth learning to race with a wheel if you can.

Ryzen offers a lot for the money. Intel has closed the gap some with it's 10th gen, but still think the value is in AMD's court for now.
I offer some unsolicited advice in regard to going Ryzen. 1st gen and it's associated motherboards are VERY RAM picky so it's important to read your QVL and try to select RAM that is known to work well with the motherboard. This has gotten a lot better as newer generations and chipsets come out but would still warn to look and check for "Ryzen compatible". My 2700X build on an x370 chipset proved to be VERY problematic until this latest BIOS update, and of note it wasn't recommended to be used with this CPU. Lucky for me it resolved all my issues and has been working fine. I was near to throwing it out and starting again.

Intel for what it is is overpriced. When AMD can release an entry level chip that is dominating the i7 700K for $150 it's hard to justify Intel's price premium. In the end though games at this point are graphics limited so spend money there not in CPU is my advice.
