Was the new batman movie too dark?

It wasn't too visibly dark for me at all.

The "dark" part was having a psychopath talking to me face to face for multiple minutes of screen time in a social media psychopath manifesto fashion. Totally ridiculous. I won't let my kid see this shit till he's 18 if I have anything to do with it.

It didn't add anything to the intensity or urgency of the actions of batman. All the riddler needed to do was say "I have demands or else bad things happen!" whatever insanity he was pouring into the viewers brain was just toxic and added little.

It was notable that batman did no investigative work whatsoever other than going to locations the riddler told him to do. Interesting that he never considered where the photos riddler consistently supplied would have been shot from...?

But I liked the car and I liked how batman stood around in the dark all the time.

I gave up on this crap ages ago. What they’re selling I’m not buying. I hate these movies, the costumes, the music, the bleak dumb pointless plots…no interest in any of it.

There are comics and then there are these movies…they aren’t the same thing at all.

I haven't seen it yet... but isn't this one supposed to present infant batman? Isn't he in his 2nd year of crime fighting or something?
I thought it was supposed to be much more detective / mystery this time.

It's a batman movie. It is more film noir style than the others. It is night time the entire film except two scenes. Theres a lot of stuff that I think is cool about it but the things I ranted about earlier are pretty uncalled for and horrible and the fact that it isn't more of a problem for more people, or like the main thing that anyone talks about when talking about this movie is concerning to me.

Old school comic nerds will recognize the story as a throwback to 1980s Frank Miller Batman ; dark, sinister, and violent.

From a matter of taste ,my complaint; I like my Batman as a combination of PHD and special operator. This version was too Robocop for my taste, very (unrealisticly) reliant on body armor.

I used the word "unrealistic" to describe a comic book movie. .

The Miller Batman arc we are discussing is ...35 years old? As a publisher DC is almost 90. The 50th birthday you are referring too is 2 generations old.

As far as "rejecting the comparison" offer me a Kane, Adams, or similar era of Batman that was comparable to the 1980's era Miller Batman as I described it. A rejection with no alternatives is hollow and boring

Alright boys. First SignOfZeta was saying air raid helmet as an example of something old school, and then saying silver age or older counts as old school. He wasn't saying that air raid helmet was silver age itself.

Second, it seems like we all like comics here. I think I liked this movie a lot more than SignOfZeta did but only because I go out of my way to suspend disbelief and enjoy these movies despite their big flaws.

This is dark like the "lets make comics hardcore!" era comics from the 80's as you mention, except that the villain and his social media tyrades being downloaded into 11 year olds brains is very 2022 and as such this is the darkest movie I've ever seen in my life, and by dark I mean evil.

I like batmans car, I like how he is always in costume, they did go out of their way to make many scenes look like comic book frames, very well.

But the evilness and post modern bullshitness is still pervasive and sucks.

The limit on moral ambiguity was successfully explored in The Watchmen Ultimate Cut and everything else is just cringe.

At the same time the marvel produced marvel movies with their total soullessness don't do much for me either. I like 100% of the fox produced Xmen films though, even the bad ones. The casting was just so good, I practically cry at every Jean Grey flashback that Wolverine has.

To me a person isn’t old school, the comics are, since people only live so long while art is forever. The last person I know who read Whizz Shazam in-period died 20 years ago but the comics still get reprinted once in a while.

I took “old school comic nerds” as being fans of old school comics. I didn’t know you meant middle aged fans of unquestionably modern comics. My mistake.

At home at least, TV quality makes a huge difference. For anyone with a modern mid-high end TV from Samsung, LG, or Sony, I fully endorse getting your TV calibrated. It sounds stupid, but it makes a huge difference to the overall image, but especially with dark movies.

I have no opinion on Batman.

So, I liked it overall, but of course it's not perfect.

Enjoyed the acting and casting. Very cool batmobile, wish we got to see a bit more of it. The whole social media psychopath take on the Riddler, absolutely believable. I can see how someone might take it as a bit too real for their tastes, but for me it I just felt like "yep, could totally see this happening".

Darn movie just couldn't quite stick the landing though. Haven't seen a movie with this many endings since Return of the King. You get the aroma of "studio suggestion" after a while. Also felt like thay started with the beginning of the movie and tried to come up with an ending on the fly, hence 3 fricken hours trying to wander into an ending. Seriously, start with a solid ending and work backwards, it always works better.

Musical score got to me a bit. Yeah, a funeral dirge, I get it. No, really, I Get It. ENOUGH WITH THE FUNERAL DIRGE.

The grittier comic books were always my favorite, like Sin City, Watchmen, and Frank Miller’s gritty, dark noir take on Batman and Daredevil. I haven’t seen it yet but from what I’ve heard — I will probably like it.

I enjoyed it - saw it in IMAX. I also rewatched the Tim Burton Batman movie shortly afterwards. Which for all its comic book camp and silliness was, IMO, darker in many aspects than this most recent Batman movie. The body count for sure - I forgot how death-y that one was. We were watching it with the kids because both the Wife and I remembered it as being more silly than serious

Yeah people used to die all the time in the 80s. Robocop is notoriously bad but goodness gracious they're killing cops and kids left and right in that film.

It was pretty dark for me also, I liked it ok, didn’t really wow me though. Can’t say I really liked the Actor when he was Bruce Wayne and also didn’t really see much of BW in the 3 hours

the new batman movie to me was the best one so far.
