    New GPU's from Nvidia

If those that care don't already know, the 3000 series from Nvidia has just been announced and starting to release this month. If you thought about purchasing a new GPU, well supposedly now is the time to consider it.

Experience games at stunning levels of detail, at high resolutions and framerates. And further accelerate and improve your experience with NVIDIA DLSS, NVIDIA Reflex, and other groundbreaking technologies that are coming to Fortnite, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Cyberpunk 2077, Valorant, and other blockbuster titles.

In this technology preview, we'll be discussing the pending GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 from NVIDIA. This article is preliminary, based on what NVIDIA has been sharing as well the stories that made the...

Every once in a while we get a huge leap in performance and I think this is one of those times for Nvidia GPU's.

There are three models being released now, the 3090, 3080, and 3070.
In terms of expected performance the 3070 is faster than the 1080ti and the 2080ti. The 3070 is MSRP of $500.
This is not a normal release, with the 3090 being more of a Titan contender, and the 3080 being the "High End" card. Normally the comparative performance would have the 3080 replacing the 2080ti, so by having the 3070 replacing the 2080ti shows just how significant a jump in performance we are talking about.

I can't wait to start seeing reviews come out on actual performance. Nvidia has been extremely guarded here!

This is also a reset to GPU pricing by Nvidia. The 3090 releasing MSRP of $1500 seems like a lot of money, but by comparison it is $1000 LESS than previous "Titan" classed cards with expected 1.9x the performance.

Mainstream cards like a 3060 will probably release early next year if you want to wait a bit more. In another year time we should expect another refresh and see Ti or Super variants.

Don't worry about the Power ratings coming out. The 3070 uses less power than the 2080ti, with more performance. The 3090 is simply an outrageous MONSTER of a card!

One of the coolest aspects of these cards is new technology that would allow an SSD or NVME drive to work directly with the GPU to load and work with compressed files, skipping the CPU entirely. Like all new tech it will take time to work into software but this will have a great benefit, similarly to how the PS5 operates. Console Porting might not be a factor anymore!

Overall this at least should lower prices of Nvidia GPU's overall, which is great for us!

Now is a good time to upgrade to the latest Generation if you were holding off.

For some reason the 10GB VRAM in the 3080 really bugs me. I would think it would be 12-16, especially considering the 3090 has 24.

I, too, am bugged by the vram. However, I think it helps my 1080ti retain more resale value since it's rocking 11GB...so..

I was holding off on the first RTX generation (20 series) since that was such a huge architectural change - and sure enough, they had crippling performance issues on first gen. I'm less skeptical about RTX 30 series, but I have less knowledge base to form an opinion about the new architecture. There's a lot of new stuff going on here, rather than just being a simple matter of transistor density. I think I'll refrain from selling my 1080ti for now just to be sure about the leap.

It's also worth pointing out that the reference models have been in short supply upon release in the recent past, and 3rd part MFRs have charged several hundred dollars above the reference model MSRP. So, expect that it will actually cost you ~$200-300 more than the listed MSRP if you actually try to buy one of these this year.

I agree, it's very odd! It does have DDR6X though which is really good. There was a rumor floating around of a 3070 ti having 16GB of Vram, so the 3080 refresh should have more. I don't think it will really matter, but I do agree it's odd.

          question on the new cards:

I currently have a GeForce 970 in my work PC at home and with the new RTX cards coming out I am looking to upgrade, mostly for Enscape (with Revit) usage. PC has an i7-4790 @ 3.60, 32GB Ram.

I realize the CPU is a bit of a bottleneck, but since Enscape is using the GPU, I don't think I would be losing that much performance, compared the increase I would be getting over the 970. Worst case scenario I can swap the new card into a machine that has a 2070/80 card and use that if it is a big issue.

That said- is it worth updating to the 3000 series cards? Price wise they are looking to be about the same as the current series:
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 starts at $699. The higher-end RTX 3090 will start at $1,499, while the RTX 2070 will cost $499.
Looking at Newegg, the 2070 Super, 2080, and 2080 Super are all in the $600-$1000 range.

I'm using a Zowie XL2731, which runs at full HD, plus a couple old Dell monitors that are at 1680x1050 (upgrades are on the list, but $$). The big reason for the upgrade has more to do with the GPU power for processing & rendering than the monitor resolution. If I leave everything alone, a 7-minute walk through video at Full HD takes 45-60 minutes to render right now, and upwards of 2-3 hours if I try to use the computer for anything else.
I have a 2070 in the office and there is a noticeable difference between the two systems.

Well you've got 2 different things going on. Gaming and work. Obviously for work use you just get the best you can afford, so you'd want a 3090 for straight work processing. Gaming though you are still only at 1080p, so a 2070 and up will work just fine, anything more an your just getting more frames.
Benchmarks show the 3080 performing at 1440p faster than the 2080ti at 1080p which is fantastic, so pick what your budget allows.

Something tells me the boss wouldn't be too happy if I bought a 3090... I should try though, just for kicks.

I'd imagine the RTX features will now really come into play in games. Most games that had RTX as an option once you turned it on you went from 1000FPS to literally 40 (see Quake 2 RTX for reference) Maybe I'm a cheap bastard but now that the 3000 series has come out I'm looking at buildng a new machine based around a 2060 or 2070, I can't justify the absolutely insane prices that are charged for the new cards. Prices on parts right now are on crack. Entry level stuff will cost $1000 or so to build, it's sad when (at present, maybe prices will come back down later) it's cheaper to buy prebuilt than it is to build your own.

Those prebuilt systems are not equivalent. They always, always cut corners. Most of the gen pop only know to look for particular models of CPU and/or GPU and RAM capacity, so a prebuilt system typically means a shoddy PSU, defeatured MoBo, crappy RAM freq. and CAS latency, crappy real-world drive speed, and a craptastic case.

Not with the stuff I'm looking at. The ones I'm looking at are built by Canada Computers and are using name brand boards, name brand ram, actually decent PSU's etc. when the equivalent spec is $1000+ for roll your own vs $899 for a prebuilt that is running a current gen Asus board, Corsair RAM and a 650W 80+ PSU it's hard to want to pay more AND have to put it together.

            Canada Computer $1099 : https://www.canadacomputers.com/prod...item_id=173460

            PCPartPicker $756 + $90 case = $846. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qFcKyk

$253 to assemble components and make your warranty claim real confusing/difficult/impossible - if it's anything like here in the states.

I'm betting pcpartpicker is based on US pricing so using part picker is actually MORE than $1099 CAD. Just did the math on google, at present it's $1125 and that's before taxes so add another few hundred. You also have to remember we get hosed on parts prices here. a card that's say $299 USD is damn near $500 here + taxes.

I figure that a lucky few will actually get hands on one of these any time before next year. My prediction was, and posts above, news on tech sites confirm that, the very small amount of stock will quickly be exhausted. As of right now there are already cards being "offered" as a guarantee for 3X it's asking price on "an auction site", according to Tom's.
At this time I have absolutely zero need for one and REALLY need to upgrade (in particular) my office monitor(s) before considering so. If the pricing and performance are really what is being touted it would be a bad move NOT to get one if you game at all....

Ya no need to be in a rush. This is probably the first time I've thought about upgrading my monitor for the graphics card. I really want one of those 50" super wide Samsung monitors for just stupid amount of visual real-estate, and so a 3090 would be of course desired.
What the going rates again for donations? XD

Next year when AMD has efficient market stock and Nvidia partners are in stock we'll see what the prices are, and by then the Super version should be out, lowering prices some more. Pick and choose, can't really go wrong with this level of performance.

Thats wild! I feel like its to big for my gaming style tho. I would have to sit across the room to play on it. I don't want to adjust to look corner to corner.

I assume that's 32:9 @ 2x4k? I haven't looked at displays in a while. Are these being offered with low latency IPS and FALD back-lighting? Or OLED?!

Nothing that large in 4K yet, don't think even the 30 series could power something that is double 4K at this point. That is 1440p double wide 240HZ QLED, resolution on it is 5120x1440. Some people are reporting issues with the backlight bleeding due to some glue debonding in the panels, so I am staying away for now until they work it out. I did see one at Frys and fell in love, might be a bit before I get one or another double wide but I NEED IT. I currently use an Alienware 3418DW and would love something 240HZ and also even larger.

punkncat, my monitor isn't that large at this point, I will be getting one that size once they work out their manufacturing issues or one like it. I think the new 1000R curve is gonna be a big hit and we will see some other panels like that one on the market for the holidays.

Here is my current setup, a bit messy wiring wise because I just got an Oculus and decided to hook up the second monitor since I am working from home for the forseeable future.
