Marathon 2: Halo before it was Halo, on a Mac. Great first person shooter. Dual wield shotguns ftw. And Bobs. Bless those useless Bobs and the ammo you got from them.

Fallout 2: Bethesda fallouts are crap.

Last of Us 1 & 2: Fantastic games, loved the story. Dark and desperate. Very intense to play.

Zero Dawn Horizon: fantastic game, loved the world and the gameplay.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: the remake with in 2001. I was actually good at the multiplayer! Medic, engineer classes. Play it a lot. Last time I was good at a multiplayer game as well...

In no particular order, and a few games/types lumped together:
      1. The Witcher 3 - one of the best games of all time, and definitely my favorite game. The Hearts of Stone DLC is a masterwork. When I finished playing I quite literally sat there saying 'wow' for about 5 minutes. So far I've played through it twice, and I still get chills at several moments in the game - in particular the battle at Kaer Morhen.
      2. Final Fantasy 1 & 3 / Dragon Quest - I absolutely loved these games. Some of the later FF games were garbage, but the first few are awesome.
      3. World of Warcraft - the first MMO I ever played for more than a few days. Made some great friends that I still keep in touch with, and spent way too many hours in-game. Started in the beta, and I made it all the way through Arthas, and MT'd everything from Burning Crusade forward. We even got a server first kill on Anub'arak, which considering we went in blind was pretty good. For the Horde!
      4. Ultima VI: The False Prophet - this was the first really big RPG I played other than FF/DQ and I've been hooked ever since. I still remember being super impressed with the intro graphics and how good they were.
      5. Quake - IMO- this is the game that really defined the FPS genre. There were others before it that made major strides, but nothing came close to Quake for me. At one point I could beat it on Nightmare. Plus the Trent Reznor soundtrack!
      Honorable mentions (in no order):
      Minecraft
      Civilization Series
      SimCity Series
Warcraft / Starcraft / Age of Empries / clones (i'm generally not good at these, but they were fun to play)
      TES Morrowind / Skyrim and Fallout 3 / NV / 4
Neverwinter Nights - I like big RPGs, what can I say.
All of the old point & click games like Space Quest & King's Quest

There are a ton of other games that I really enjoyed but am probably just forgetting.

I am surprised it took so long for Witcher 3 to be mentioned. It is an absolutely gorgeous game and well thought out. In my own post I mention how much I hate the kind of game where you have to hit key combo to get through and every single monster fight in the game is exactly that. I rather suck at games and cannot get very far into the story line. Aside from that though, if you just want to hop on a horse/ship/feet and wander around and fight stuff it's darn cool.

I never found the Witcher to be very reliant on the key combo to survive. You need to dodge and occasionally cast a sign, but if you really wanted you could get though the game using brute force other than a few fights/mobs.
I read you post- are you referring to the flash sequences (press A repeatedly, then X, then Y, then A repeatedly)? I can't recall any of those in The Witcher, although I could have forgotten one somewhere.

Side note- the side quest in the DLC where you talk to Roach is absolute genius and quite possibly the best quest in the game.

Wasteland (The '88 OG) - Old school, green pixel, floppy goodness.

Mario Kart - Goes well with pot. Got me and my buddies through high school.

Fallout 1 & 2 - The successors to Wasteland, hexagons rule.

Morrowind - Got me hooked on being a fetcher.

Civilization - All of them except 6 were pure gold. They should port them to Android. 6 is terrible though: an opaque, aimless, unmasterable game that forgot about fun. WTF happened to you Sid?

Fallout (Bethesdas) - Best games ever made. I'll put 2000 hours into the next one too.

Okay, so that's more than 5 but I've put enough time into all of them to consider them second jobs.

There are a couple Android games that are good Civ clones. I have Polytopia and Hexonia installed and they are both pretty good. Both are (so far) ad-free and pay-to-win free, instead you have the option to purchase additional civs to support the games. Would recommend both.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen any of the Age of Empires games mentioned.

My #1 favorite game of all time is Age of Empires II. So many different ways to play whether it’s online or just dueling it out with the computer and even after almost two decades it’s still fun. So many good memories memories.

#2 Age of Empires III. Improved gameplay and graphics, it just doesn’t have the sentimental value of AOEII.

#3 Civilizations III - so much thought and detail goes into that game without being overly focused on spiffy graphics. It’s way too easy to sit down to play for a bit and suddenly realize you’ve been at it for HOURS.

#4 Red Alert III - action packed gameplay, cool graphics. I’ve been playing it off steam for a year or two and still discover new tidbits here and there.

#5 Gears Of War - I’m usually not much of a console gamer, but GOW tells such a good story that I go back and play through the older versions from time to time. Not to mention with 4-5 different styles of multiplayer it’s almost like having an entirely different game. If my wife and I get divorced it’s probably because I chainsawed her one too many times 🤣

In no particular order, my top five would have to be:
          • Dark Souls (PC) - I've spent hundreds of hours playing through this game and have beaten it countless times over the years. It just never seems to get old for me. These days, I spend my time playing through this game by trying different builds for PvP play.
          • Dragon Force (Sega Saturn) - This is a strategy RPG released in the US by Working Designs and remains one of the best games ever released on the Saturn. It has tons of replay value and the graphics were impressive for their time. The game holds up well to this day and collectors can expect to pay a premium if they're looking to play on original hardware.
          • Castlevania III (NES) - By far, the best of the original Castlevania games. It's branching paths, various secondary characters, and classic Castlevania gameplay make this a must have for any fan of the series.
          • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (PC) - While more modern entries like Oblivion and Skyrim polished the graphics and controls, Morrowind remains a much more intricate and deeper game than its contemporaries. It doesn't have quest markers or arrows pointing you to your next destination. The game literally dumps you into the world with nothing more than a journal to keep track of what you're supposed to be doing and says "good luck & have fun". Yeah, the combat controls and graphics don't hold up well these days, but mods can address those sorts of issues if you're so inclined.
          • System Shock 2 (PC) - This game is the father (though maybe not the grandfather) of the "shock" series, including Bioshock. While the graphics don't hold up well these days (thank goodness for mods), the spooky sci-fi atmosphere, story, and multiple play styles it allows you to choose from make it a landmark game you can play time and time again to this day.
          Honorable Mentions:
          • Half-Life
          • Diablo
          • Starcraft

            2 Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3 (Arcade/Sega Saturn)

            3 Target Earth/Assault Suit Leynos (Genesis/Mega Drive, PS4)

4 Destiny 1/2 (Every platform it's available on. Yes, the grind is real!)

5 Lords of Thunder (PC Engine or the Sega CD version if I feel like slumming it.)

Runner up: Tradewars 2002. Thinking of spinning up a copy of it, if anyone is interested in it? I'll open a separate thread for this.

The new Gauntlet on steam is pretty good, has the same type of character progression and you can play solo or team with your friends and it save the progress so you could tackle a hard level as a team then move forwards all solo if you wanted.

In 1988 it was revolutionary. Basically it's the turn-based RPG spiritual progenitor to the Fallout series. I saw it on the shelf and had to give the store all of my money. Had to.
You control a squad of Rangers wandering around the Post-Nuclear apocalypse American SW. Glowing deserts, mutant animals, crazy monks, wasteoids, robots... good times. It's primitive as hell but I still revisit every couple of years.

Have you stumbled across Wasteland Remastered yet? Just saw it a couple of days ago but haven't plunked down my money yet. Looks like it's the exact same game just with vastly better graphics. Probably how I'll play my next go 'round.
The RPG classic rises from the nuclear ashes! Wasteland Remastered is an overhaul of the 1988 title that brought the post-apocalypse to video games. See where the Wasteland series began and experience the character and world the sequels are built on.

I feel like you almost have to break this into two groups just because with some multiplayer games, "you can never go back." The community has just moved on, or support has died off.

                  #1: Chrono Trigger
The peak of 2D JRPGs, and amazing story, art, and controls. This was SNES at its peak. Just amazing world-building and writing, PLUS the combat system was a huge improvement over other titles in the same genre.

                  #2: Shattered Galaxy
If you've never heard of it, this is a decent article. I played on a squad wayyyy back, and I swear to god, I haven't played anything like it since. It was like a Starcraft WoW hybrid. You built out several squads of units, which might fulfill a particular use at face value, but could be customized any number of ways. I remember I was placed on a tournament team with high level players who had insane armored and high-DPS units, but they counted heavily against what was essentially a salary cap on the game. Us low-level folks took up less room so we brought in paper cannons with stealth cloaks to get behind enemy territory and take our their sensors and artillery with zerg rushes. Tragically, there's no way to get that feeling back unless I find a time machine to take me back to 2003.

                  #3 Counter-Strike 1.5
I think this was the last version before Steam, and I am adamant that it was the best of the bunch. Something changed in the changeover, and the movement and aim mechanics just felt off ever since. It's my favorite pure FPS game, and unfortunately to some degree you just can't go back with this one.

                  #4: Team Fortress 2
Yet another one that just isn't the same these days. My favorite times on this game were after they introduced team deathmatch, and before the hats were introduced. The level of play felt high, and the number of special items and perks were low enough that you could do the rapid mental calculus to figure out your match-ups on sight.

                  #5: TIE Fighter: Special Edition
This game came out before Episode 1, and was about as much of a Star Wars fix as you could ask for at the time. The Special Edition came with an extended campaign, an amazing soundtrack, and voice-overs for all the characters.

Honorable mention: Hawken (RIP), Overwatch, Diablo II, Nexus TK (RIP), and Super Mario World.

Chrono Trigger is awesome. Picked up an original copy at a used game store a couple years back, though I played it on the DS before that. It's pretty much the only ATB style RPG I care for. (I hate ATB systems)

Chrono Trigger is amazing, have it on my SNES emulator, I'll also agree with CS1.5 I played the crap out of that in high school and would practice in the off hours using the POD bots (ping of death). TF2 for some reason never resonated with me.

Last but not least Hawken all I can say is I WISH that game was still going, I was one of the first early adopters. It gave me everything I craved I always wanted faster combat in Mech Warrior and Hawken finally gave it to me.

                  1. GTA V ---SO many hours in this game. In the dead of winter when its cold and dark all the time it's nice to go chill on a beach with your friends and just general shenanigans
                  2. Skyrim--Just so good every time
                  3. Fallout New Vegas--See above
                  4. Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl-- This was the first game I played with the hyper realistic shooting physics and gun handling. Still a masterpiece of psych thriller genre
                  4. Battlefield 4--Still probably the pinnacle of online shooters. COD has surpassed it somewhat but I still have a better time with the vehicle physics in this game

I put a lot of hours into BF4, but I'm a bit burned out with the series. I highly recommend Rainbow Six Siege. No vehicles, obviously but it's the best shooter from this gen, IMO. It's still getting tons of support. All maps are free with the base game and you can unlock operators as you go, so you can just get the base game.

Yeah, I have been playing Siege since it release and while it was pretty fun in the beginning it started to just remind me of a round based FPS like Warmode or CS:GO pretty fast. I'm more about the slower paced games. I like the BF series because you could kind of choose your pacing depending on which map routes you played but just like you I burned out on the series. My favorite of the lot is actually BF1 now that I'm thinking about it.
