Minecraft - infiniteness of the system
Civilization iV - huge replay-ability, stable and reasonably good mechanics
Apha Centuri - excellent turn based strategy
Freelancer - Just fun to ignore the game script and do your own thing
Populace - who doesn't want to play God!

Let's see if I can get down to 5:

1: Gran Turismo, I guess Sport. I owned every 1 up until 6 because it was only on PS3 and mine had been stolen so I upgraded to 4.
2: Oblivion>Skyrim. I loved both but there's just a certain feel to Oblivion that didn't quite come back in Skyrim
3: Red Dead Redemption 2: Oh Arthur.
4: Destiny: I think what made this game great for me was getting online and playing with all the fools from around here.

Who gets the final spot? Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1943, CoD World at War, Fallout NV, any of the AC games (black flag is a stand out), Minecraft, GTA IV?

5: Diablo 2. I just spent way too many hours playing this to go with anything else.

1.SNES JRPGs (I'm grouping these together because a big chunk of why they're my favorite is because I was a fat child in the 90s.) - Chrono Trigger - I know it's a fan favorite, but it's one of my all-time top games. Tons of hidden stuff, great music, multiple endings, good graphics for the era, good balance of challenge, huge amounts of replayability... just a fantastic game all around. Earthbound - Another fan favorite, but it's one of my most memorable gaming experiences. Although the game is fairly linear and does not have multiple endings I find myself drawn to a play through at least once per year. The humor and heart resonate with me. Lufia II - Rise of the Sinistrals - A lesser known classic RPG with fun puzzle elements and a monster raising system. Great story, the ending makes me cry. Mario RPG - timing-based JRPG with some platformer elements set in the Mario realm. Easy to learn with a good amount of challenge. Final Fantasy 3 (or 6, depending on how much of a weeb you are) - amazing music, wide range of characters, classic ATB battle system with unique abilities.

      2. Undertale - Quirky game with a unique style, great music, and a strangely endearing story. I wasn't a fan of bullet hell games until I played Undertale and for whatever reason this one just hits. A lot of fan-made covers of the music are on my regular Spotify playlists.

      3. Stardew Valley - I was a big fan of Harvest Moon when it was released on the SNES and Stardew Valley does a fantastic job of bringing that spirit back. There's just something about the do-whatever-you-want vibe that sucks me in. It's a very relaxing game and is a great tool for introducing non-gamers to the hobby. I grow so many goddamn pumpkins

      4. Resident Evil - I'm still a mild fan of the series in general, but the original game cemented my love for the survival horror genre. I still get nervous walking near windows after dark due to the fear that zombie dogs are going to bust in and fuck me up. The remake of RE1 that was released on GameCube (and now Switch probably) is excellent. Honorable mention to Silent Hill, which has a delightfully unsettling vibe, but somehow even jankier controls.

      5. Killer 7 - This is a weird one. It's a first/third person rail shooter with multiple characters. The story is basically an allegory of god vs. the devil and you fight these semi-invisible clown-laughing mfers that explode if they get too close to your character. I have never played another game quite like it.

glaman5266 I enjoyed the BOF series, but they didn't quite stick with me the same way as other RPGs have. BOF2 is certainly on my top ten list though, even with the bizarro translations it was a very fun game. I never played BOF4 or Dragon Quarter.

Jonnydread BoF4 went away from the Goddess Myria storyline & took a much more Eastern feel & approach to it's story, mythology & environments. It's dragon system & lore are quite different as well. Best visuals of all the games IMO.
Dragon Quarter is a totally different game. You can move around each battlefield and line-of-sight & proximity are factors as well. It also forces you to replay it a few times & it's very difficult to get through the first time. But you keep spells, some stat boosts & equipment so you can approach things differently each time. The forced replays are a turn-off at first, but it actually works well with this one overall. It's good, but definitely an odd one in the series.
If you're up for playing BoF1 & 2 again, the GBA ports are arguably the best versions. Updated sprites/character pics, auto-run & in BoF2 the cash & EXP are doubled to kill some of the grind. Sound isn't as good though, but that's the only downside. I play them through my Game Boy Player on my Gamecube.

gabe Come now you northwestern cur, I have a collective 1000+ hours in Skyrim and well over 500 in FONV. New Vegas ALMOST made the cut, it's really great game; I treat Bethesda like I treat weed - I do it every day, but I wouldn't say it's a big deal. I used to be a shooter guy, but I burned myself out on Black Ops II and now I just don't have the interest. Now hush and let grandpapa enjoy things.

glaman5266 I am lukewarm on the dragon system in BOF games. Sometimes it feels OP and sometimes it feels minimally useful. I still get the Windia theme from BOF2 in my head occasionally. I have a huge backlog of games I'm working through right now, but if I'm hankering for something old school down the line I'll keep BOF4 and/or Dragon Quarter in mind, thanks!

Witcher 3. Playing through it for the 2nd time now and it's just amazing.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Nearly 4k hours and still can't get replaced.

Battlefield 3. The last battlefield game that I found to be fun. Used to play this with my friends 2-3 nights a week and we always had fun. Used to get banned from servers all the time for cheating but none of us cheated, just steam rolled players who wouldn't work together.

Half Life 2. This game was the game that made me a PC gamer and got me hooked. Played it at a friend's house and built a PC later that week.

Halo: Combat Evolved. Remember playing this at every friends house every weekend for years. Even set up Xbox connect to spoof lan connections to play before Xbox Live was a thing. I wish I could recapture those days chugging mountain dew and staying up all night grinding on Blood Gulch.

Games that are the most memorable to me

Super Mario 3 - The first game I really put practice and time into when I was a kid.

Sim city / sim city 2000 - I love city builders today I still play Cities Skylines but I'm not putting it on the list or else all I would have is building games

Halo series up to 3 - first online games I really like to play with friends.

Forza series - especially 2-3 At one point I was ranked in the top 500 world time trials. I loved beating people with way cars that should have destroyed me I think I had 10 different S13's to race in different classes. and also several different sleeper R34's. I even bought a real 240sx years ago wish I had the money to finish it.

Kerbal Space Program - I always liked space games and when I found KSP I was hooked immediately. I just wish there was a bit more of a story or goal or something in the carrier mode.

          1. Metal Gear Solid - Not the first, not technically the best in the series but this game really opened my eyes to not only what a video game could be, but guided me down a rabbit hole of real life thinking.

          2. Doom 2 - IDKFA

          3. Kings Quest 7 - It gets a bad rep. I guess because it didn’t fill some big shoes left for it but I have some good memories of this game and it’s fun.

          4. Tyrian - It’s a fun shooter, but I associate this game with the last days of my Grand Father and playing it with my Father so it has a lot of sentimental value to me.

          5. Halo 2 - I guess a odd choice considering my previous choice but I spent years of my life devoted to this game. Between matchmaking, playing with friends, tricking/glitching with friends, and using my modded Xbox to mod the game using premade suites and hex editors. What a blast. I still have my X3CE chipped Xbox and all the software on my old desktop.

These will in no way align with anyone else's and that's fine. In no particular order:

            1. Civilization II - I was and am ignorant of the series. Picked it off the shelf at GameStop when people still bought PC games that way

            2. Grant - Lee - Sherman: Civil War Generals 2 - probably responsible in no small part for my decison to major in history

            3. Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings - godfather of all RTS

            4. Halo, Halo 2, and Halo 3 - a significant part of my social life in high school and college, when LAN parties were still a thing

            5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - the only game ever that I have dominated the battlefield; granted it was on Playstation but still

Any list with classic CS and HL mods is highly respectable in my book. Classic CS is the best shooter of all time, IMO. I highly recommend Rainbow Six Siege if you were a fan of CS. It's everything CS:GO tries to be.

House Of The Dead 2 - Dreamcast. My favorite light gun game of all time.

Contra - NES. Played it so much when i was a kid & it’s just as good now as it was 35 years ago.

Robcop vs Terminator - Genesis. A very simple run ‘n gun but i just love Robocop as a character.

Resident Evil 4 - Gamecube. I didn’t think there was any way it was going to live up to my expectations but it surpassed them by a mile.

Twisted Metal 2 - Playstation. Better than the 1st in every way & the endings for each character were great. I beat it with every character because i really truly cared what happened to them. Every other game I’ve played like that were pretty much only for the gameplay itself & the story was inconsequential.

                Honorable Mentions:

Die Hard Trilogy - Playstation. My crowning achievement in gaming is beating Die Hard 2 with an original digital PS controller. I remember reading in EGM or some other magazine that one of the reviewers said he thought it was all but impossible to beat it without a light gun.

Shinobi - Sega Master System. Hands down the best 8 bit port of the arcade game. I was just messing around with the controller one day & discovered a level select code. One of the magazines at the time would give you a free game if they published a cheat code you sent in. Well i sent it in & never heard anything about it. A short while later i was flipping through that magazine & there was the cheat code. No recognition or even acknowledgment & over 30 years later I’m still waiting on my free game.

Every game ever on the 3DO - .......3DO. Ok maybe not EVERY game but damn i loved that system. It was truly next generation technology at the time. Going from SNES/Genesis to the 3DO blew my mind. Still have it & still play it. Mad Dog McCree can kiss my @#% but i really love that game.

Everyone seems to speak very highly of RE4. Tried it once, can't get into survival-horror control schemes. Watched my bro play it a ton though & it looks awesome.

Contra is so hard, lol. Even w/the Konami code I could never beat it.
