    Your Top 5 Games!

Hi there! I wanna know what your top 5 games of all time are. Reasoning not required but encouraged.

In no particular order, here's mine:

-Diablo 2. This is one of only two PC games I play. It's a good mix of fast-paced combat & numbers/calculations. I like games with lots of numbers. I have a hard time using a keyboard for games, but for some reason this one just clicked with me. I like the lore quite a bit as well.

-Pokemon, gen 2 (GSC). To me, this is Pokemon at it's absolute peak. Aside from gen 1 I have played these games more than any other Pokemon title. So many mechanics & QoL improvements it isn't funny & the Johto region is as beautiful & varied as the Pokemon. Also simpler because Natures & EVs weren't a thing back then. Best Pokemon games in general IMO.

-Legend of Dragoon. OK, so this was my first multi-disc game back in the day, and it was touted as a Final Fantasy killer. I didn't like FF (I HATE active time battle gameplay), so I picked it up for like 15 bucks. The story is super good! The game play gets a little repetitious after a while but the story is good enough to keep you wanting more. The cutscenes were beautiful for the time as well. I love this game.

-Minecraft. What can I say? It's Minecraft! So many genres of games rolled into one title. Near infinite possibilities. Personally, I like homesteading. Building houses, doing the gardens, tree farms, that stuff. I don't like mining (!), but there are so many things to do besides go underground, so much to build. I usually play with my wife, my brother & his wife. Always a good time.

-Dark Souls. This game is challenging but rewarding. Constraining at first but opens up, revealing so many possibilities. And the lore is incredible. This is one game I will always come back to if I want to play something familiar, but can take a different & fresh approach to every time. And the combat, being it's core, is super good. Not fast/frantic like Dark Souls 3, but more rhythmic and calculated. Lots of numbers to look at as well, being an RPG.

Honorable mentions: Metroid Prime, Super Mario World, Zelda: Link's Awakening, the first Borderlands game, Pokemon Red/Blue.

    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night...
Epic 2D side-scroller for the OG Playstation.

    Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim...
    Bethesda games are my $#!+.

    HALO:
This showed up at the perfect time in my life.

    Diablo 2:
Nothing says Hardcore like having your level ~35 Paladin (and an equal level Barbarian) get killed by a level 90+ character in one hit... just for to collect your ear. Had to quit after losing those two characters... didn't have anymore disappointment left in me. Lol.

    CoD/Black-Ops...
Too many good memories not to be on the list.
If you need to talk, I will listen. Leave a message and I will call you back as soon as I get it.

I put SO many quarters into stand ups. R Type, Galaga, Contra....I recently found a token from a place we had in town called Stingrays, back in the 80's.

I play only PC now, and have preferred Steam in that if they sell a title they almost 99% of the time support it beyond the OS it was designed for. I don't care for the fact that so many game makers are now insisting on having their own launcher. I will still deal with that before willingly spending money on another console of any type for myself.

The old Warhammer "looking down from the top", along with the Warcraft/Starcraft of that same type. I have spent a WHOLE lot of hours playing these. I still keep Soulstorm ready to play. They lost me when they started the Retribution style and onward. Along this same ilk I also enjoy Ashes of the Singularity. I purchased it mostly as a benchmark tool, but enjoyed it enough to spend way too much time on as well.

Civ 5- This was my first taste of the Civ series and really like it, still play it. I enjoy having this going when I am also doing or looking at other things. Civ 6 sucks big hairy monkey balls.

Sniper Elite series- I love the "frame to frame" shooting gallery type style of this game. My biggest issue with this one, as opposed to my current fave below, is that it's a bit slower paced and with the different controls I have issue going back and forth between them.

(some of) COD - I have really liked their single player campaigns. The only thing that irritates me about this franchise is something I don't like about a variety of games. It will come to some section (like the bridge out) and you have to hit some key combo to move on. I have never been good at that and cannot say how many times I refused to play a game through again because of it. SUPER famously used in Hitman and Assassin's Creed. Irritates the shit out of me.

My current fave is Division 2. If I had to put a favorite on one maker/series I would say the Tom Clancy titles from GRAW on through to, well up to Breakpoint. Breakpoint has been so terribly broken since release...but they finally added some feature that should make it more along the lines of a GRAW/Red Dead type hybrid. Division 1 was just released free (till tomorrow) and I have been enjoying playing it.

Gran Turismo- Of honorable mention, and console based, this was by FAR my favorite driving game of all time. Need for Speed is an almost ok replacement for it. I REFUSE to buy another Play Station. Their hollow promises on backward compatibility and shitty device support (IE "go buy a new one") lost me from EVER being a willing customer again.
Of note for PC play, Assetto Corsa is quite amazing. Less game than sim, it's REALLY hard in it's higher "levels". The open wheel racing is my limiting point.

The thing that gets me about 6 is that you are working away at this really silly social policy and law "accomplishments" that never really seem to DO anything, or kick in decades even centuries after it was invoked. It seems like they spent a lot of time creating this complex ecosystem of things you CAN do in the game, but really don't seem to actually have cause to bother. The only other aspect of this game I personally wish had carried on was stacking of players. It was so much easier to move an army somewhere.

Yup. So many facets added that don't seem to do anything - or if they do you can't figure out which is doing what and when. The tech tree is so labyrinthine it would take 100 play-throughs before any sort of strategy could be devised. I also don't want to mess with religion again, was glad they ditched it in Civ 5. Basically, I guess there's just a level of complexity that kills the fun for me and they finally found it.

Definitely try Total War Warhammer II. It's based on Warhammer Fantasy, not Warhammer 40k, which is essentially DND but with an emphasis on large scale warfare. One of my all time favorites. Also, it has underrated RPG elements for an RTS. No dialogue options, but it has a cool story and you have skill trees for your lords and heros.

Planescape Torment - most in depth story of any computer RPG period

Civilizations - maybe it's just nostalgia or guilt from the hours spent on it. Maybe love for the creative way they had of preventing you from cout this game was great.

          Final fantasy 3
Great games all the way around. Fun characters, cool story line.

Crusader Kings 2 - infinitely replayable and very challenging

wolfenstien 3D - my first 1st person shooter

I think the key factor in all of my favorite games is the soundtrack.

Halo 3/ODST - I kinda picture ODST as an expansion to Halo 3, as it still has Halo 3 in the title. The 2 combined create the ultimate game IMO. The ODST campaign is phenomenal, H3 multiplayer was the best, add in firefight, forge, theatre, and the H3 campaign and it's just perfection.

Elder Scrolls V Skyrim - I've been playing the ES games since Morrowind, and while Skyrim's story (main quest, civil war, factions) is weaker than Oblivion or Morrowind, it just plays better. It's more immersive and the soundtrack is amazing (I'm listening to it right now lol).

Mass Effect 2 - the broader strokes of the narrative are kinda meh but there's so much depth to the characters in this game. The soundtrack is E P I C.

Kingdom Hearts - the anachronism of mixing Disney and Final Fantasy works way better than you'd think. The gameplay is fun, and the story really resonates with me, especially Riku's arc.

Metroid Prime - literally the reason I got a gamecube as a kid. Immersive world, challenging puzzles, epic boss fights. This game has details that I sitll don't see modern games doing; things like seeing raindrops on your visor or the visor fogging over when you pass a steam vent.

              Honorable mentions:
Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 - once you find the tryhard community that makes hyper realistic parks using modded theme items, this game changes into something really special
Pokemon Sapphire - I agree with Glaman that GSC is a better game, but Sapphire is the one I put all my time into as a kid (coming up on 400 hours). Finally completed my pokedex last year!!

ODST's campaign was soooo good. Running around New Mombasa added a little survival feel to it.
You're right about MP. Every time I play it & see things like the visor fogging I geek out a little. New games need more immersion like that. Best GC game IMO.
Good job on completing that Pokedex.

top one would be GTA IV actually, i know it sounds insane to think that your could find a good story in a GTA game, having nothing to do after recovering from shoulder surgery many years ago i finished the game. and the whole arc, motivations and growth of Niko Bellic as a character really struck me, you felt like you earned the ending. i dont feel that way with a ton of games out there

Fallout 3 would be up there as well, but more so just from the overall feel, first time ever seeing ghoul my reaction was "what the hell are you?" and low an behold, that was an option in the dialog tree.. the storyline is great as is the exposition you get from reading the terminals around the wastelands to see what the hell happened, once you get the stealth suit from "guns of the patriots though" the skill factor of the game goes into the toilet, but it is nice getting to walk through the wasteland and crouching before you get to detected to avoid the random attack encounters

Earthbound, i dont know why, the mechanics are as basic as you get, and the storyline is "out there" but theres just something about its appeal that keeps bringing me back

Halo reach, partially for the storyline, partially because i love firefight mode.. and the added character customization doesn't hurt

Battlefield 2142. i have so many fond memories of titan mode.. the walkers, being able to aerially bombard, being able to attack the titans directly, being the guy to blow the reactor, the firefights in the hallways.. the goofy ass ragdoll effects of shooting a guy in the leg on the run and the bullet was so "heavy" to the games engine that the ragdoll swung his leg around and kicked himself in the back of the head., man i miss that game..

plenty of honorable mentions, theme hospital/2 point hospital (the modern remake), Civilizations 5 and 6 (they are both flawed just in different ways), Overwatch, borderlands franchise, final fantasy 7, 8 and 10 (i have yet to play 9, but i know its great), my problem is, i see the good parts in a lot of games, and appreciate them for that, but all the other parts, arent always great

the top RPG's for the SNES in the general view of gamers are FF3, Chronotrigger, Earthbound, and Secret of Mana

typically everyone picks one of those, i just happen to fall into the earthbound camp for some reason.. maybe its the music

                Legend of Dragoon
Has underdog appeal & a very strange but original take on dragons. One of the few RPGs in this genre I actually finished. Oddly enough, I'm not a FF fan.

                Castlevania: SotN
                Obvious choice.

                Skyrim
                Again, obvious.

                Diablo 3
I played Diablo 2 a bunch, but I really enjoy the changes made in 3.

                AC: Odyssey
Was sad when I finished it. And so friggin' lucky game +all dlc was only $20!

Honorable mention: Shadow of the Colossus
The scale of the colossi battles is intense. Haven't been able to find a game like it since. Please share if you know a game like it!

Totally on board with you on Dragoon. I'm not a FF fan either, but this game was the perfect alternative. So good. After reading this thread again I wanna replay it now, lol.
D3... Very interesting pick. I like D3 for it's mechanics & excellent console gameplay. Feels pretty good. But I liked the build control & setting/environment of D2 a bit better. Kinda like how I prefer the first Borderlands game over the second. (!) If I want a dark, dreary game then I don't want bright, shiny stuff. D3 is a good game in it's own right, though.

                  1. Prey (the 2017 one by Arkane) - This game is just a masterpiece. I've only finished one playthrough so far (currently working on a Nightmare difficulty run with no neuromods), but this game has such an amazing story and is just so engaging to play that it will forever be one of the best games I've ever played. It's a shame that it isn't too well known.
                  2. Minecraft - It's Minecraft. There are infinite possibilites, and it only gets better. Such an amazing game.
                  3. Skyrim - It's one I just love to sit down and play when I want to relax, and with how large the modding community is, you can make it exactly what you want.
                  4. Breath of the Wild - Absolutely love this one. The first time you get off the Great Plateau and realize just how big the world is is amazing, and as you explore you just keep finding more and more things to investigate. Once you figure things out and get geared up you can have a bit more fun with things in the world as well, and there's so much to do to keep you engaged. Plus, the dlc adds some really good content.
                  5. Horizon: Zero Dawn - I went into this game knowing absolutely nothing about it other than it was that one with robot animals, and it turned out to be an absolutely phenomenal game. Really looking forward to Forbidden West.

Honorable mention for Pokemon Platinum/White/White 2 and Dark Souls 3. Pokemon Platinum was the first game I really just sat down and played through, and I'm still working through DS3, but I'm loving it now that I'm really figuring out how to handle things. Oh, and Age of Mythology and No Man's Sky. Hello Games really bounced back from that disappointing release and gave us another fantastic game to sit back and play for a little while as a way to relax and have some fun.
