    Home Theater Multimedia Software

Hey, I was wondering if any of you guys were into home theater. I need a good program to run a library of shows. I cut the (cable) cord around 2009-2010, and I got an itch to watch sitcoms and animated shows like King of the Hill and Futurama. I have everything on the home theater PC, but I want to be able to make a video playlist with all of the shows and then have it played in a sort of shuffle mode. Basically, like if I was watching cable or dish. Normally I use VLC and I can make a video playlist, or just drag and drop a group of files into the screen, but it'll play everything in order, not random/shuffled.

Thanks for reading. If I cant get help here I'll probably ask in the AVS forum.

Jellyfin, Kodi, and Plex all have support for playlists I believe. I'm a Plex fan but mostly because I've been using them for like a decade+ and I don't feel like changing all my preferences haha.

Should be able to just dump a bunch of episodes into a playlist or you can make smart playlists based on metadata like genre's or something if you want to be a bit more specific.

Plex is cool, but I dislike their promotion of their own streaming service. Jellyfin is my preferred, however I run both simultaneously on my server because they each have pros and cons.

I am with you, I have been using Plex for a long time and overall it works well but I am thinking about giving Jellyfin a try. Before Plex it used XBMC (that later changed its name to Kodi) and while I liked its flexibility I hated the constant change it seemed to be going through. I dislike having to constantly be maintaining and reconfiguring Media SW and that was the hell of Kodi for quite a while so I moved to Plex. Now Plex is optimizing itself for its streaming service and the cost of being a media server SW so good chance I will move to something else. Plex works well and has good support/community but I literally had to go in this weekend and make some configuration changes due to issues that creeped in after the latest server update.

Grendel Yeah, I was on the XBMC train years ago, but it fell out of favour in my house as streaming services improved. Then when the costs seemed to keep climbing I switched to Plex.

What I can tell you having made the switch from Plex to Jellyfin very recently is, the biggest advantages to Plex are better subtitle access, and being able to access it on the go seamlessly through the Plex app.

There are work arounds for Jellyfin. If you rip your own DVDs then you want to make sure the embedded subtitles come with it. And I set up a tailscale vpn to access my stuff on the go.

Overall I like Jellyfin more, but there is no perfrct solution.

Also a Plex user. I recently heard of Jellyfin, might have to check it out.
          Plex works fine.

Can I do the random shuffle playlists with Jellyfish?

Jellyfin (not fish ) has shuffle for music but not for movies according to their forum.
