Seems CD's are a obsolete form of storing music and I have a ton. Whats good software to burn them so I can load them onto a thumbdrive.

I use Cyberlink Power2Go (version 8, they are up to version 13) it works well and is pretty simple. I converted my CD collection a long time ago but still get asked by my wife and/or friends to rip something occasionally. I got this in a bundle with a laptop years ago for free.
There are a lot of freeware for ripping out there though I have used in the past Exact Audio Copy (EAC) and most likely would still be using it if I had not gotten Power2Go for free. EAC works great but initial install and setup is a bit of a pain (from what I remember) and the interface isn't as polished but it will work great once setup.
I'd link EAC for you but my work computer will not let me go there <shrugs shoulders>

Ehhh, I’ve heard you can upsample and improve audio quality but I’m skeptical. I know it is technically possible but you’d have to invest into a AD/DAC and I’d have to figure out how to actually do it. The CD is just 1’s and 0’s so you’re not copying any actual audio, however, software that checks the 1’s and 0’s accurately is not cheap. Perhaps there are other newer cheaper methods and perhaps you’re not a total sound engineerd HiFi snob like I am. For instance I can hear the difference between 44.1k and 48k sample rates. Most CD’s are natively sampled at 44.1k.Comment

Documentation and meta data file management will be your issues. I’d suggest creating a file structure on a portable harddrive and then pull albums from that master archive onto your thumb drives.
The biggest issue I ran into was file management. After like 500 albums you can’t find shit.

Not sure what this has to do with the OP but you can rip a CD without any additional compression so you have all of the quality that the CD was created with. Though I would recommend using one of the lossless formats. Early CDs [80s mostly] are more compressed and could sound pretty bad but over time CD quality improved considerably. Regardless the OP owns media in CD format and wants to rip that media so they have it (since CDs are perishable) and have the ability to play their music in their car. With both Power2Go and EAC you can easily set up your meta tags not a hard thing to do and a lot of instructions and recommendations out there. They'll ever grab and add meta tags from various databases out there. I have over 400 albums of music files and have no issue finding the music I want at any time. Hell I keep lossless versions of all of my music on my phone.

Of the vehicles I own the newest is a 2004 so I can listen to cds no problem. My wife has a new subaru so I use a portable cd player with Bluetooth. I want to put my collection on an mp3 player but they are basically dead. The current models in production don't have enough storage. The whole situation makes me sad...Gas, Grass or Brass, no one rides for free...Comment

This brings me back. I used to use Nero back in the day to burn disc's full of MP3's from Utorrent, Limewire, and even Napster. Fun times.
Now I just pay for Spotify and listen to podcasts. I have a couple playlists downloaded as well.Comment

I just used windows media player for part of my collection with few problems. As long as you’re connected to the internet it can look up most newer albums and automatically name and sort the files by band/album/song.
the big problem I ran into was after a couple hundred cds (mileage varies) media player wants to put everything in the same folder. You can manually tell it to change and it looks like it did but when you open the settings box again it has gone back to the original selection. I’ve had it happen on two separate laptops. None of the suggestions Ive found online work, not even a reinstall of media player. At that point I switched to nero.
second issue I had was that I need multiple thumb drives in my car. My radio seems to run out of memory for file names. If I put everything on one drive my car can’t see anything past bands that start with “N.”
3rd issue is with audio books. If you’re using the auto naming previously mentioned, regardless of software suite, the publishers like to use a different naming convention on at least one disc so that it is filed away under a completely different folder somewhere else in your collection. For instance discs 1-5 and 7-16 go into c:\frank herbert\dune\ but disk 6 goes to c:\penguin publishing\dune\herbert.
4th more of a side note from the op question. Thumb drives in my car seem to be okay with just adding a new disc or two but the sd cards in my mp3 players require me to completely rewrite the sd card to get a new album to show up. Sometimes just adding one file corrupts the whole file system and I can’t use it again until I rewrite the whole thing.
The only other thing I might suggest is using a desk/counter/bench where you can do this standing up. The get up/sit down every 5 minutes got real annoying real fast.Comment
