Replacement for paintball? Spatial Ops

I've been waiting for this basic idea to come to fruition since about 2013. This is what will take over where PB left off.

In this example they're playing in the same physical location due to being in the woods, but the game also supports remote multiplayer where each team (example) could go to their local bball court in different parts of the country and play each other from there.

Would be very fun if played in the woods or a rental field. The unfortunate reality is that 99% of users would play from their living room.

i have a VR headset. Very fun to use when i cant get to the field. But i would never compare it to the real thing

Pretty cool! Something similar was done with laser tag, called Recoil. You linked each gun up w you smartphone, which acted as a HUD and showed you health, ammo, and where on the field buffs or health drops were located. It was fun, but alas the devs stopped working on it. Probably didn’t sell enough of them.

I remember recoil. It was cool.

I think Mixed Reality is a fundamentally different beast. Being able to see rockets flying past your head, explosions etc. while also running through a real life woods field without worrying about spectator eyes - that's pretty darn cool. And then you can play modes like planting bombs, or having generals who direct tactics and place defenses... I think it has more potential than anything to date.

Where do I buy all that stuff so I can play? Is it released ? I know absolutely nothing about virtual reality.

The Quest 3 is $500. You’re definitely missing something 😆

I stopped playing video games on a ps4 and games were $60-$80? So I’m just thrown off by $19.99
$500 is cheaper then a ps5 I think

Well let me clarify maybe. The system, a Quest 3, is $500. The game is in preorder now and looks like it’s $15.

Awesome game and concept. I'm hoping within my lifetime we will see this kind of tech be able to be shrunk down into masks and have this integrated into actual paintball games.

Empire tried this with the EVS HUD. Not sure what came of it - do they still support it? Obviously mixed reality would be cooler.

The EVS fizzled - too expensive, didn't really do anything useful. This is a whole new thing.

Makes sense. Empire made it expensive and it seemed like a closed architecture anyway. You had to use their gear. It’ll be interesting to see if Meta/Quest can make this work. They’ve got deeper pockets so I guess they can lose money for longer before giving up 🤣
