Man, 2k is definitely not cheaper than most people thought. As always, people shouldn't upgrade unless their system can't run their games/software anymore.

I’m at that point unfortunately. I’ve been on an Asus Strix 1080ti since 2016. And I game at 1440p.

good grief, the 1080 is from 2016? That card is almost the best card ever created. People are still using it with great success. I'd probalyl pay about 1k for a card today that I know is going to be that good for 10 years.

yeah, it’s from 2016-2017. Many folks consider it the best card ever. I mean, it can still run a lot of new games really well even at 1440p. Especially most of the PS5 ports like Ghosts of Tsushima, Final Fantasy, etc, those types. It runs all of those extremely well. I find that it’s struggling with UE5 games now though (lack of ray tracing and DLSS.)

…but yeah, maybe not the $2k flagship but I would go for the 80 series, maybe 5080 ti or super. People did think the 90 was going to be $2500-2700 when AMD admitted defeat in the top of the line / flagship segment though. Even though $2k is still cray all things considered.

Yeah, there aren't a lot of games out there that you can't run on a 1080 unless you're looking for higher resolution. The biggest issue is devs are just becoming lazier/corporations have unrealistic launch deadlines. So, games arent being optimized anymore. I just upgraded my mobo/cpu this year to a 9800x3d after 12 years on my old set up. I've only recently ran into issues with bottle necking, hence the upgrade.

Before that though, my 980 was more than enough for basically everything on mid to high settings. I upgraded to a 3080ti for like $200 give or take second hand. Just snag people's gear for a steal when they sell to upgrade like paintball lol. I'm already seeing listing for 4090s in the $250-400 range locally on FB market place. Unless you're really wanting the AI features second hand market is looking real good.

Yeah, they realistically can't really sell for much more when the 5070 is equivalent at north of $500. Realistically, you're likely not going to see much of a noticeable improvement from high end 4x to lower 5x gen. Even on the high end, I don't expect there to be much noticeable gain unless you have the supporting hardware.

As someone who just buys whatever Nintendo makes for $250 and then runs it forever I find it amazing that there are enough people in this market for it to even exist.

It costs ten times as much as a console, goes obsolete, doesn’t have Mario Kart…how are there people buying this? I’m not poor or anything but to me $2000 is, if not a car, at least a piece of audio gear that will last me the rest of my life.

This is the difference between being a console player and a PC player. I hate console controls so always felt console is a complete waste of money but a PC I can do all sorts of things with and play games as well. I build my PCs based on performance needs for productivity work and that usually covers me for games. I am never shooting for bleeding edge graphic performance just doable. Look at the_matrix_guy still using a 1080ti that 8+ years old and still working. Last PC I built I built in 2014 and last year did some upgrades memory, CPU and added a 1050Ti (most my CPU/MOBO can support). I was running integrated graphics. I am looking to build a new (to me) PC and will keep my budget sub-$600 and get plenty of performance that will last me for several years as a multifunctional computing device.

Prices are insane. It all started during the crypto mining boom, it created massive shortages in supply for enthusiasts, then it got further exacerbated by the shortages brought on by the pandemic in 2019. And then finally, factor rampant inflation. And here we are. At Batshit crazy pricing. And yes, people buy them. Lol

The 3080 was actually priced nicely but no one could get one at MSRP due to limited supplies and scalpers. And then Nvidia quickly realized that they left money on the table, and that people were willing to pay really stupid prices.

But in terms of gaming, you really can’t compare Nintendo to PC gaming. Apples and oranges man. I say why not both. And good home theater and hi-fi equipment too. You can actually hook it all up to a gaming PC. I have my PC connected to the HT receiver too.

edit: and actually another factor, as we said earlier, is the fact that Nvidia has no competition in the high end segment. So that’s driving prices even higher.

I will never go back to console.

I run a Azeron Cyborg controller has 36+ buttons (WASD) to controller mapping. So you get superior speed and precision of the Mouse with the movement of a controller.

You got to try it. I can’t lobster claw for nothing. It’s so fast and precise. I should be getting fiber installed any day now. I can’t wait.

you don't need the latest and greatest, but this post was made becaue nvidea just announced the new hot graphics cards. Plenty of people will never buy these and still enjoy PC gaming.

Eagerly awaiting the pricing of the AMD RX 9070 XT. Per the name, it should compete with the 5070, and if the 5070 is $550, then AMD is going to have to undercut that a bit.

Hopefully it'll come out for around $500, which is the most I prefer to spend on a GPU.

I've been doing most of my gaming on Linux anyway, and AMD has better support there thanks to Valve throwing their weight behind graphics development on AMD hardware for the Steam Deck, plus the driver being completely open source so the community can work on it. Meanwhile Nvidia has a proprietary Linux driver that gets no fixes until they release it themselves. Which doesn't seem to be high on their priority list.
