Anyone using a Synology NAS?

DS220j that I just got keeps booting me and telling me to re-enter my password and credentials. Hitting the "use different credentials/remember me" click box is doing nothing.
This is in relation to access to the shared folder, which is set as a mapped network drive per their tutorial.

All my other sharing and network settings are working fine. I can access the unit, but cannot seem to stay connected to it. What am I doing wrong?

Have you reset your authentication through DSM?

edit: you can also reset (i.e. delete) the credentials that Windows stores in the Control Panel->User Accounts->Manage Windows Credentials Might be worth just clearing them out of that first.

Unless I am misunderstanding, DSM is only for the web page connection aspect, which is working fine. I have changed nothing there.

All of my user account stuff for access to other computer and this are as they should be when I look there. I have all of the users needed, including this one showing. All of them are showing having the appropriate password remembered.


I went in and edited some settings for WOL, turned off the Apple stuff, and found where to disable password strength. I have been using it too much for it to attempt to go to sleep so it could be related to that. I might have to set it up for always on or something.

DSM is the GUI front-end for the NAS. You can add / remove users, configure storage, etc through it.

For the Windows Credentials- I would delete the credential for the NAS, which will force a new sign-in and re-add the credentials to Windows. I want to say we had some issues like this at the office and deleting the credentials resolved it.

Glad you got it taken care of! My NAS has been awesome, and I'm still wringing more out of it every year.

Not without headaches, though... I had an issue with mine today where an SMB share would only work with the IP address on one of my machines, not the share name. Had to trace it all the way down to my hosts file where I had lazily hard coded the IP in... Past Me is always full of surprises.

Lol, past me was a mixed bag, but pretty brilliant in many tech matters. Issue is that future me has a shit memory and getting worse all the time. He counts on spiral notebooks of notes that may or may not exist and especially in current-ish form.

As a complete side note to this issue...

I could not get the Synology unit to "act right" in regard to having a unique password. IE, I had already set up a shared user profile among my computers/network where even though not the log in stuff, it was what it wanted for Windows to be happy while sharing drives across the LAN. The password for that was not up to snuff for the Synology unit and would not allow me to use it. Even if I turned off the password strength requirement it just wouldn't allow me to do so, and of course Windows kicks back if you eliminate the password requirement.
Once I went in and changed all the password strength up among the common user it has been working really well in terms of coming up and being available on power up with no other issue.

Yeah... there are quirks. I love my Synology... but sometimes it feels like the Model 98 of home servers. It got me into the game, but I'm ready for more.

I had an old DNS 323...heck you might have bought it from me, if I recall right? Anyway....it was an excellent unit for it's time and did everything I wanted it to do aside from having a 2TB limit. I moved over to Windows PC with drive racks inside and that worked pretty well but was much less than low energy footprint. I have grown tired of trying to keep my robocopy tasks on schedule between the machines I was keeping redundancy on....the ONLY aspect of this I don't like is the proprietary format, and it bothers me to be single source again to a degree.
Just the same, not much of what I keep around on a local level is super high priority to me any longer.

what are you using for your cloud backups? I've looked into a few but can't fine one that has the features I like that is also affordable.

Not that you asked me, but I will plug Dropbox with my dying breath. I've been using their services for over a decade now. I've had a paid personal account for more than half of that time, and a business account for the first couple of start-up years. In all of that time, it has been a pure pleasure to use across multiple users, multiple platforms, on multiple continents. Features like version histories, shared-link controls, selective sync... they all started with Dropbox before being adopted by the other major cloud service providers (AFAIK).

Responsible use of any cloud has a learning curve, though.
The most common mistake I see is people storing highly sensitive data on the cloud without having personally encrypted it first. All of your data will be encrypted during transfer by your cloud service provider, and they likely encrypt it themselves when storing it on their servers, but they have access to the unencrypted data that you transfer to them. To protect against malicious actors, one must personally encrypt that data before sending it off to the cloud. There are applications that can be configured to take care of this for you without changing your normal workflow by more than a few clicks; e.g. Cryptomator or Veracrypt with a key file stored on your machine.

I've used Dropbox for years and have paid account, but IMVHO it isn't quite the same as a dedicated backup like Backblaze or Carbonite. Dropbox & Drive are online file storage / file synching, not data backup. Plus some of the files I work with can't be used on Dropbox due to how the Autodesk software file locking works when multiple users are in the same file- but that is a different issue
