So right now I have an ancient Cryobi drill press, and it's a real piece of turd. So I need a better one. What's a decent mid range drill press for the novice craftsman? I'm only going to be drilling aluminum, hardwood and possibly thin mild steel with it. I'd rather have precision over power, which my current drill press has neither.

Maybe finding an older used machine local might help. When you say you are looking for precision, what is wrong with your current machine that's not working for you?

I'm pretty sure the shaft is bent, and the drill bit wanders quite a bit off center as soon as I add pressure. It's just really old and shot and it was cheap to begin with. The motor is also dying, sometimes I have to turn the chuck by hand to get the thing spinning. It's just all around bad.

Abandon ship. You can play around with the chuck and reseat it in the taper to see if that helps with the run out but it sounds like its time to upgrade.
