    Spark plugs

I haven't had this discussion since high school so....

On a daily driver what do you like?

My grandfather always had champion plugs. Said they have the garage he worked at a machine to test plugs to show how much better theirs were than the competition. Only their plugs almost never worked in it and every other brand they had did.

Buddy back then that we did a lot of automotive work with sweetie by Bosch plugs, the more pluses the better.

NGK is pretty much the industry standard these days. They are even making plugs for some other companies. Other than that Denso is another good brand. Of course if you have Chevy you can go wrong with ACdelco, same goes for Fords and Motorcraft. In the past 10 years I've seen a steep decline in the use of both champion and autolite plugs in every application. With the exception of MOPAR vehicles we do not sell champions for any other application these days. The same goes for Bosch. I've seen many shops try to use fancy Bosch plugs in the wrong application and not have great success.

Long story short I'd go with NGK.

It depends on the manufacturer of the vehicle. For a daily driver or any car that isn’t a custom setup (like old car with a different than stock engine) use exactly what the manufacturers use and you can guarantee you won’t have issues.

    Chrylser usually is champion
    Ford is motorcraft
    GM is AC Delco
Honda is NGK or Denso ONLY
and many others use ngk or denso.
    Audi/VW is Bosch

From many years of professional experience with Honda, if you use anything but exactly what the vehicle calls for, you run a 75% chance or higher of having issues.

I just took nearly new autolite premium platinum or iridium plugs out of a CRV we just picked up with 210000 miles. It had a misfire code. Some shop just put those and a new coil in before the car got traded in and made its way to us. Those autolite plugs retailed for $9 or so but the shop charged them ~ $15 each. I went to RockAuto and bought the correct laser iridium plugs it should have for $9 a piece (or $20 if you go to the dealer).

Fixed the misfire. I have personally done this countless times when I worked for Honda.

Use exactly what the manufacturer says to use. Period.

If you think 15 electrodes on those stupid Bosch plugs are going to get you a million miles per gallon better fuel economy when you Chevy calls for copper Delco plugs, I have some beautiful ocean front property in Iowa I would be happy to sell you for a good price.

      This. All of this.
Acura is also NGK - Honda engines.

Spark plugs it is only OEM. You don't have to buy from the dealer but "better" or "cheaper" plugs are just a waste of money, and you don't change these very often.

Also spark plugs last a lot longer due to the materials used on them now. People still replace them more often then they need to be. But I have seen many cars with 100k+ on the original plugs. Only to pull them out and find them burning fine. Often it’s the coils that go when the plugs get build up.

The brand means alot less than getting the proper temp range for your plugs.

As has been said, the days of opinions are gone. Also spark plugs are expensive now. You go to the dealer and buy exactly what they tell you for whatever the stupid price is and you use that our you pay the price.

I’m speaking of modern engines here…DI, turbo, Atkinson cycle, 100,000 mile warranty, etc. When it come to your all original 1985 IROC Z, lawnmowers, outboard motors, etc then playing around with the cheap stuff is still valid.
