    Poor neglected bike won’t start.

Any ideas on why this won’t turn over?

I’ve got my suspicions that I’m going to have to degunk/drain the carb, but I’d like to have someone smarter than me confirm it.

This 2001 Yamaha VStar 1100 sat with the gas in it for over a year, and I want to sell it so I went to start it up, and no-go.

    Video of no-go

    Things I know:

Battery was on trickle charger the entire time.

Tank was drained through the valve, so liquid flows through that.

Gas was blown out of whatever hoses I could detach.

Carb diaphragms taken off, allowed it to sit for a couple hours hoping to dry up residual old gas.

Found drain valve on carbs, took screw totally out, no liquid flowed out even with tank refilled and valve in on position.

Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, it wasn't bad at all... but then I was making a bobber out of it so alot of stuff was coming off anyway. Now I have to do the same with my Road King, not looking forawrd to that at all.

You said a couple of things. 1. The bike would not turn over. But your video seems to show you trying to start it in gear and it moves forward, so the engine is turning over. If the bike ran ok when you parked it, and it sat with old gas for a year, the carb is gunked up. This could be either corrosion caused by gasahol or evaporated gas that is now varnish and is clogging the small passages of the carb.

If you are not getting any gas out of the bowl drain with the gas tank full and the valve "on", then the float is stuck or the needle is stuck preventing gas from entering the carb bowl (my guess is the latter). If you can remove the bowl easily, this should allow you to dislodge the needle. Then put the bowl back and see if gas flows. Before I did a carb job, I'd try this. You might also try spraying starter fluid in the air cleaner to see if the engine kicks on for a few seconds. If it does, then you have a fuel issue (which seems obvious now).

the drain on the carbs never drain fully, same with the tank. investing the time in it now will pay off later. take your time and just do what you need to do.
pretty much take the time to do what the guy in the video did (also, dont forget to trim your nails lol).
does it have a fuel filter?
after you get it going, you might knock some residual rust/crud loose from the tank and need to do another cleaning.
