    Is this worth considering?

Alright crew, looking for some advice on this beast:
    - will be just driven mostly to and from work which is 1.3km one way down the hill.
    - my town is small so the grocery store is 1.6km or around the block from work.
    - I’m a bit impulsive and like fun things but I have to be realistic because I have 3 kids 2 under 5

I don’t have any personally experience with these, but I’ve heard they can generally be pretty crummy to actually operate. If you need an interesting old 4x4 you might be better suited with a vintage Toyota 4Runner or something.

From general personal experience - be warned that old vehicles can be money pits.

Not that I can thrown any stones. I’ve come close to some oddball automotive purchases myself. 1987 Pontic Fiero anybody? 🤣

That’s stupid money for that thing. Start watching government auction sites for better deals.

Not in Canada. He might get a G Wagon or Milverado though.

Man, the nostalgia... My experience was with just about every configuration of the HMMWV's. Mostly command, troup carriers and communications shelters. I'm sure there are many people that have logged more miles/km in one than me. But, I have had my fair share. I'd definitely drive one again, given the opportunity. 😉 If your intent is to, at any point, haul the family with you. Please, consider that, that particular command vehicle is stock configured for 4 seats w/belts, plus cargo. The seats can be swapped out for something like a bucket seat and it makes a world of difference. Oh and the batteries are under the front passenger seat. 😏

I did dyno work on the powertrains for these POS for way too many years. I validated the transfer of the transmission at Willow Run Hydromatic in Ypsilanti and followed the program as GEP brought it in-house while working at Lotus, Roush, and AVL. The fucker haunts me! Follows me everywhere! The last thing I worked on was validating the new throttle position sensor when they switched suppliers.

Absolutely no way on Earth this is suitable for kids. Every surface is steel. It’s made for trained adults wearing helmets, and ones who have already signed their lives away. It’s not for precious delicate children who are more important than you.

An actual civilian vehicle, even one from the 80s, is massively ahead on the safety front. You can’t smash your head open on every single interior surface of a…Ford Taurus, for example. Or anything else. It’s a vehicle famous for people dying in it, partially the ones like this without proper doors.

Also it’s slower than you could ever imagine, gets zero MPG, and if you get it stuck good luck ever pulling it out without a larger military truck.

EDIT: I just noticed the “has no blowby” comment which caused me to literally laugh out loud.

Also: It will never make enough heat to defrost the windshield.
Also: It will ride like absolute dog shite.
Also: It is already broken down. For real, seriously. it's dead-lined. They all are.
Also: Its more miserable than a early 80's jeep with the top down. You could completely build an aftermarket jeep from spare parts for 1/3 the price.
Also: Most tire shops won't be able to change the tires.
Also: You need slave cables to jump start it.
Also: You will need to often jump start it.

I could do this for a long time but I bet you see the point.
