Wasted birds and windows...

Anyone else have issues with wasted birds unaliving themselves on your windows?

Long story short. I have this mountian ash tree in my yard. I love is as it produces white flowers in the spring, and then berries late in the fall. The berries hang on the tree all winter, and bring wild life into my yard as they use it as a food supply when everything else is baron.

Fast forward to spring.. the berries are still hanging on the tree, but are now fermented. Birds come in droves to snack on these delectable intoxicating berries.

Its pretty common to find red smeared bird poop on my truck, and one of two dead birds in my yard from drunkenly hitting a windows year.

Today, a flock of Cedar Waxings showed up to feast. The flock has to be numbering in the hundreds.

They are tearing berries off alarming rate, which is fine, but four of these little pretties have hit my window in about an hour. Two of them are surley dead, and two seem to have their bells rang, but I'm willing to bet they get up once more sober.


Now Im looking like a crazy man trying to shoo them off of my tree before more die. Its not working as they just come back as soon as I give it any distance.

So, part of this post is just to share a bit about birds and trees, but I'm also looking for advice. What do you recommend we do to make out windows less appealing to these birds? Hang an owl decoy out front? Coat my windows in enough dirt that they aren't reflective?

I guess at the very least, my cats are highly entertained.

We had an apple tree in our yard up until last year. In the early winter after the frost, but before the freeze, the deer and turkeys would have at the grounded fermenting apples and turn into a scene. The deer just trip a lot, but drunken turkeys are one of the funniest friggin' things I've ever seen in my life.

most birds hate movement, things like reflective pinwheels might work

If you have any old junk CD's just hang them from some fishing wire from the eave so they obscure the window. The natural movement of the wind will make them flash around and alert the drunkards to the fact that it is in fact solid.

Take them down once the world greens up.

Trick also works to keep birds from nesting in eaves.

Hard to keep drunks from crashing into anything. Could try decals, but likely won’t work well. Maybe a fine mesh net in front of the windows? Put it in front of the windows by a few feet.

Yup all the time grew up in an A frame with a wall of windows. Certain time of the day the reflection makes them look like they can pass threw. Sliding glass doors have got me to. Especially when drinking is involved.
