Tank and barrel question

I went through some of my closet this weekend, still 3 boxes to go. most my tanks are dead pass 15yr life, only 1 can be hydro and will be 15yrs in 2025.

Back in the day you had crossfire, gorilla and few others.

So what tanks are you guys using/recommend now days?
both carbon and aluminum.
I will running automags, ditto duce, etek just to name a few.

Are barrel systems still used, which ones, freak?


Also what do you guys do with dead tanks, carbon, aluminum and co2.

Aluminum tanks never die, they just need a fresh hydro, fyi.

When I got back into things I bought a 77/45 Ninja HPA I've been happy with it. I think Freak inserts are a very solid versatile choice, but the market has many options now that are great. Stella barrels are great imo.

Ninja's entry level 4500 tank is a good buy, even with the basic reg.

If you have bottles that are expired and can't be hydroed, drilling a hole in them so they can't be used is a good idea. Then pull reg/valve and recycle like regular metal.

Sometimes places that repair fire dept air equip will take expired carbon bottles, or at least tell you where/how you can properly dispose. Or any gas supplier.

I'm re-using my old angel freak kit from 20 years ago, just had to buy a cocker back that took 5 inch inserts. Think that back was around 60 bucks new, got it 2 weeks ago. Plenty of interchangeability with older parts is still possible.

A tank is a tank really, just get one in a size that's appropriate for your use. I've heard negative things about First Strike tanks and their QC. Realistically unless you're shooting very high rof regs don't matter.

Freaks are nice for being able to use it across a variety of guns, but a barrel is really just a barrel.

Except for all the features that make one manufacturer different from another.

I won't touch gorilla myth for instance. They had a bad history of regulators imploding but even though that's been resolved my bigger issue is they only run 1 burst disk. It's the tank pressure disk that's required, they do not run a output side burst disk which means if anything ever happens to the regulator seat, you are now putting straight tank pressure into your marker.

As to what to look into, ninja, hands down in my opinion. They came on to the scene right around when you were putting your gear in storage and basically took over HPA overnight. Their early tanks offered a 5 year test cycle and a 5 year warranty while being end user adjustable output pressure. Then throw in some absolutely fantastic customer service and you can see why they took over. Only a few of their tanks are not adjustable output pressure at this point and you won't have any real reason to buy those. All are 5 year test and warranty

Their budget tanks are fiber wrapped and a 68/45 will typically run around 160 new. They drive have aluminum tanks as well but for your uses, I'd suggest the fiber wrap (someone's branded as "rival by ninja as well)

Their upper tear stuff like the 77 just got is carbon fiber (lighter than the fiber wrap) adjustable output and you can even adjust the bonnet rotation so you can have the gauge and fill nipple pointing where you want while they are on the marker, that one ran me $250

Honestly, I'd pay to hydro your last HPA bottle one more time. This gives you plenty of time to research things.
But if you're really set on a new bottle, Ninja is the way to go. High quality, great regulators. If you get a Ninja with an adjustable regulator, your Automag will be very happy.
I've read that Empire bottles are good for the money, though I've never owned one.

Barrel kits are still used. Freak kits are common. HK Army has a kit, as does Bob Long. There are a few others, but some of the old names are gone (Python, Kaner, Pipe, etc.). Most barrel kits do their job & you can't really go wrong with any of them. As before, barrel kits are NOT required, but if you want one just find one with features you like. As long as your paint is good performance will be good.

Some people make wind chimes out of dead bottles.
