Radar chrony help (yellow handheld)

So I bought a used radar chrono and it seems to only read occasionally. I replaced the battery in it and read the manual. It seems like it will register the first shot, but when reset its hit or miss.

Does the type of paintball matter with a pocket chrono?

Do I need to be in direct sun for it to work? It was a cloudy overcast day when I tried it.

Gun used was a pump trilogy with freak barrel.

Couple things with those I've noticed

1) it will skip shots every once in a while, just the way it works

2) I've been told it works on sound, so don't worry about the light but if you have other people shooting near you it can get confused

3) sometimes holding it off of your barrel about an inch can help, or holding it at the very end of the barrel

4) I've noticed mine wants about 15-20 feet of paintball flight to really be able to read. If you are shooting an object close to you the paint may not be in the air long enough

AFAIK, it doesn't use sound as a means of detection, but radar, i.e. radio waves, rather. Thusly, the amount of light doesn't matter, and when used properly, it shouldn't skip any shots. The chrono will send out radio pulses, and detecting if an object - the ball - has increased the distance since the last pulse, measuring the difference in distance, and combined with the time between the pulses, getting a velocity. This knowledge will help, in knowing how to use the chrono correctly, and avoiding to miss readings from user mistakes.

The radio waves are emitted/detected from the ribbed black area on the back of the chrono. Therefore it is imperative that you do not obstruct them with any part of your fingers and/or hand, as you hold the chrono. This is the most common mistake, which renders the shot to be "missed" by the radar, since you will be blocking the radio waves. Try holding it just on its sides, with the tips of your fingers and thumb.

Next, you want to angle it, so that you point the backside of the chrono upwards, some 30 to 45 degrees. This is to make sure that the ball will travel well inside the radar cone, all the way of its flight path, making it possible for the radar to get several good readings of it.

Finally, you want to have an unobstructed flight path for the balls, of 15 feet at the very minimum. Preferrably 30 feet, also for the radar to have a decent amount of flight path, to get several readings of the ball, as it travels downwards.

When used this way, it should give you a proper value of the fps for each and every shot.

There are some other types that will use break-beam eye setups mounted inside a firing chamber but radar is the best way to do it for our purposes.

It took me a while to figure this out.

Some people get around this by using the little opening at the top of the unit along with a small loop of cord to hang the chrono off the front of the gun's barrel.

I would say also to make sure your unit has a good battery. They take something odd, 3N I believe.

I forgot to mention this but I have found that as well, don't block the back. And yes, battery is weird but easily available online
