Building a New Battery Pack

My ongoing Angel saga has led me to building a new battery pack. I’ve carefully disassembled the original pack and have the new batteries. The original pack had been spot welded using conductive strips. I don’t have a spot weld or strips, just a soldering iron.

I’m using the PBN Angel battery thread as a guide. They mention just soldering the batteries together along with the wiring harness. Do I need to use any contacts between the batteries or just solder them directly to each other?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I’m definitely not proficient solderer, but I have done this. It’s not easy at all to solder the strips or wires onto the top or bottom of the batteries. They soak up a ton of heat so the solder doesn’t stick well. Probably a good reason why most rechargeable batteries are spot welded. I ran into the same thing with a power tool battery pack.

I can’t remember what I eventually did for the angel pack unfortunately. I just know it’s difficult to solder onto battery cells like these

I was looking up cheap spot welders on Amazon. Definitely an option. Not sure how many battery packs I will end up rebuilding but my brother-in-law is into RC stuff so a chance it might be useful again.

Just a side note, make sure your spot welder is specifically designed for battery ... A regular spot welder will absolutely destroy your battery ...

Looking at reviews and prices I think I’m going to avoid buying a battery spot welder. I’ll look into some other options or just get a battery shop to build the pack as it’ll be way cheaper.

There are electrically conductive adhesives out there. One is called wire glue , there are also a bunch of epoxies that are silver bearing and electrically/thermally conductive.

Use that to join the cells and use sturdy shrink wrap to encase the assembly. Should work OK.

Good idea. I’ll look into it a little more. I have a heat fun and bought some tubing so that part is covered. Just want to ensure there is good contact between cells as they are flat tops.
