I want to wedgit an insert, and then a unibody. What's the best, most reliable way to do it? I'm willing to spend a little money or machine a die if necessary.

It depends what you're wanting to wedgeit ... Brass Sheridan barrel can be done with a punch or nail head.
I like to run a socket inside afterward to make w=sure everything is the perfect size.
For freak insert, ive been wanting to give it a go for a while ... they are too thin, so i was thinking about machining a plug with a divot where the wedgeit will be. This way i wouldn't smash the insert flat ...
For unibody aluminum gun, if they are 1"OD, you should just drill them and put a regular detent. Ive done it to my unibody bushmaster and no rollout anymore :P

has anyone tried to make a wooden form with indents on it and had it inside while putting the wedgets in? It seems like with a freak insert you would really need something to prevent the whole thing from deformingComment

Yup, I just turned down a hardwood dowel and used a router to relieve where I wanted the wedgits for a Piranha LB I did several years ago. Made a punch out of a damaged wood chisel with a nice radius to hammer in the wedgits. I did three wedgits similar to how PPS does them and made them ~1/4 inch long. Using the dowel I was able to make a "stop" to hold the dowel in place. The dowel was long enough to reach the bolt face position down the barrel and I removed the bolt and ran another dowel down from the bolt end to provide additional support. I think if I redid this I would make a "die" and use a press vs. hammer strike (actually multiple light strikes) for better consistency but I really don't work with brass too much anymore. You can do wedgits in aluminum barrels (I have 3 for my Blazers and Pyre) but those barrels are fairly thin walled because of how Blazers and Pyres hold their barrels so are pretty easy to wedgit using the same methods used on brass barrels.

Yeah, I was thinking iFit insert. Maybe I'll make a slotted mandrel to coin the material against.
Paint is just such crap, I'm going to see if wedgits on a .688 insert work better than shooting through a .675. It's maddening.Feedback

I've done nail polish wedgits in a Freak insert, worked for the time I used it.
Spider! had a neat rig he made to press wedgits in - maybe he can post a picture of it again.Comment

Best to support the barrel with a socket or a custom thing you can actually tighten against the inside of the bore.
Press a nickel shape into the barrel

The wedgit does not go IN FRONT of where the ball rests. It goes RIGHT where the ball rests, so the ball is WEDGED into the WEDGE IT

But open bolt guns have ball detents that keep the balls in place before the firing cycle, and once the bolt is moving forward and the ball enters the barrel, it is immediately fired so there is no need of or benefit to be had from wedgits.Comment

Thus the experiment...
I'm wondering if there's an advantage from that brief moment of constraint, where the ball is positioned, centered, and not rotating. Or not. But for science, I want to try it.
Oh, and my ball detent went bad and it drove me nuts because I'm not used to that happening, since I'm always underboring on a pump... the velocity fluctuations confused me way more than they should have. Then I shot two at once and figured out why.
So instead of just moving on with my life now that I have a new detent, I need to permanently deform something and call it research.
