    Removing paint from hopper shells

I have an old 12v Revvy that I got in a lot. Someone painted the translucent green shells black with what is probably spray paint.

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or products that will get this paint off with damage? Also, I’m assuming they are made of polycarbonate, is that right?

Oh man. Im curious to see what people say. I scratched the hell out of a rubbery black revvy shell sanding paint off as a kid. Maybe citris strip, or goof off would be safe on the plastic?

I would be hesitant to use any paint remover except maybe a citrus paint remover and it might not be strong enough to break the bond. Sanding would be what I would use then go through the finer media to the point of wet sanding and polishing the plastic. I believe the plastics used is ABS for these translucent VL Hoppers. The big downside other then the hassle is it will be hard to maintain the logo detail. Though it might be fun to sand that off smooth completely.

Try acetone on an inconspicuous area. It'll take the spray paint off for sure, but it may also soften the plastic, so tread lightly.

          Bad idea with revy shells

Sometimes vegetable oil will soften spray paint to the point where soap and water will take it off. Sometimes, depending on the paint, it will not work at all. I’d put a dab of oil on it and leave it overnight to see if it works . As stated above, I’d hesitate to use anything harsh as the shells are already so weak from the factory

I’ve used EZ Strip on spray painted parts before. Works great on metal, not sure about plastic but might be worth a try.

Citri Strip would take care of that without issue. And it smells great.

I thought about Citristrip, but the bottle says that it isn’t for plastics, so I’m hesitant to try it.

In Modeling (CARS, Gunpla,Planes) ive used brake fluid to remove paint from abs parts where a previous owner started a kit and botched a few parts. Never harmed the plastics and after a good wash in the sink with some dawn it looked good as new. Good luck

Polycarbonate shells were used from 2001 onwards.

Early Revolutions (1997 -2001) were made of a much more brittle plastic.

Yours looks like an early model to me.

The early revs weren't poly carb but far from brittle

I'm pretty sure the polycarbonate shells are the brittle ones. Polycarbonate breaks down in UV light and weekens.
