noob question: reg pressure tester

was gonna buy a duck bill but thought maybe an on/off since it can bleed…

is it worth the extra money to pick up an extra cp on/off or do duckbills bleed when you disconnect the asa connected to tank

I'm sure the duck bill would be just fine but for the little bit extra for the on/off you'd save your tank rings in the long run and make things just a little easier on yourself

Using on on/off is easier as you can just switch it off, adjust the reg pressure and flip it back on, no unscrewing the tank. Especially helps if you end up spending a lot of time adjusting regs.

I'm running old button style on off I'm sure the ASA used to have a cradle cradle was lost the time and I actually like having the slide button better than a twist knob for my reg tester

Also it's worth considering let's say you are testing a tank regulator and you don't get the pressure right now you are trying to twist off a duckbill asa from 1100 PSI while not having much leverage on the duck bill

In order to test my regs I have a on/off for mine think it might be an old CP or something else, one thing i learned was make sure the ASA that you use has a purge, there are a couple of on / off ASAs that do not have a purge portion so when you turn it on the pressure stays.
Another thing I did was got some quick disconnects in bulk and put multiple pressure gauges on them so I can check my HPR reg output, as well as my tank reg pressures with one on/off, I also have a couple other items that I have the quick disconnects on so I can check those outputs so this idea might be overkill for you.

Yeah most older on/offs don't purge. You were meant to shoot the lines dry. It's actually a good safety feature if the HPR holds air after degassing. I have an on/off that's meant to purge but doesn't at high pressure for some reason. I put a slide check on it and now I have a purge. I also did the QDs with multiple gauges.

An on/off will also let you check reg recharge.

Here is the one I use. Assbled it with some spare parts. Used a quick disconect so I can change the dial gauge depending on the range I need. Some will use a bigger 2'' gauge.

I have so many spare remote lines I should repurpose a few. I’m using a DP level on/off which works well.

What orings does the slide check use? I have a bunch of random unbranded slide checks that will get intermittent leaks when I try to use them. Whenever I take them apart the orings always have a gouge out of them. I've been using 015 in buna and urethane, 70D and 90D and nothing works.

for an on/off then i was going to buy a cp direct mount 2008 on/off. so that in the future if needed i have another on/off lol ill check if this purges for sure right now

I use this. Had both the remote asa and the in-line on/off in the parts bin. Works great because the on/off does purge.

The pain with the duck bill is getting it to release pressure. Most dont have a vent hole.

Find an old on/off asa, it will save you a ton of headaches. Also DO NOT use any Micro "Gauge" they are horribly inaccurate. By industry standards they really cannot be called Gauges, but should be called indicators because of inaccuracy. The older Ashcroft gauges Air America used were good if you can find one, but most of the 2" are good.

A slide check is a nice, inexpensive way to add that function. Someone had a few for $16 each I think.

Why stop at a gauge? Get a proper transducer and DAQ to get some exact values! (I say, right after saying to save money on your ASA...)
