Anyone have any freight experience?

So submitted an offer on a used cnc mill, It was accepted. WOOT!!

now the problem is it is located in New Jersey and I am in South Carolina. Trying to figure out how to go about getting a rigging company/freight company to ship it with out costing an arm and 2 legs.

No, i don't have a trailer.
Yes it requires a fork lift to move and i don't have access to one.
I also would prefer not to drive it 800 miles in case something were to happen.


8'x8'x8' approximately 6,000lbs and needs to be moved in the next 2 weeks preferably.

Do you have a rigger in mind in your area? In my experience I have contacted the rigger we were planning on using and they usually have a list of freight handlers they work with and have experience with. I have not arranged a shipment like that in SC since about 2006 so any contacts/experience I have is limited. When I was shipping a lot of freight the carrier I used most often was American Freight, not because they were the cheapest but they were all over the country and had resources to pick-up and load the truck themselves. I usually only needed riggers on the delivery side so usually depended on more local/regional riggers. One thing if you are going to the house a lot of freight companies will not deliver to residential areas. Don't let that discourage you because what we would do a lot is have the freight shipped to the riggers facility then they would unload and prepare it at their site the transport the equipment to your location and handle the placement and setup.

Thanks. The seller recommended a rigger on their end. I requested a quote and made sure to mention it was delivering to a residential driveway. Haven't heard back yet.

I did this for years, don’t really think you need a rigger ( crane work) but 6k is bigger than a normal warehouse capacity.

where is it located? It would help if it’s in an industrial park you might be able to grease a palm from another facility to get it loaded. That would require you to be there.
Is it crated and on skids? That would allow a roll back truck to winch it on and off. That would probably be my best option.
What is the plan on your receiving end?

I was hoping the company handles machines on both ends. Still waiting on a response. If i need to rent a forklift there is a rental place about 10 miles away. hoping to do it with out making a trip up there.

I worked as a mechanic for Hyster New England for a few years. Heres a couple things to know.

If your renting a forklift make sure to know the length forks you need. Most places default to 48" forks. But will rent longer. The longer the less the forklift will lift due to leverage.

Measure and know your overhead height.

If you are crossing dirt or soft areas let them know that. That's a different type of forklift.

If you haven't uswd one before play with it alittle to learn the controls. Slow and smooth with the controls.

A rental for a 20 min lift job will be pretty expensive, I used to work in a HE equipment rental place.
I used to operate a pretty big Hyster on Base.

Supes, since the origin is in New Jersey, you might call Mullin Machinery. That's where I bought my Omniturn, and they have arrangements for riggers and trucking. I honestly have no idea if they'd be willing to help you, with a 3rd party sale, but I can say they were very good to deal with for my transaction.

You might call them, explain the situation, tell them they were recommended, and ask who they'd recommend to pick your machine up and truck it to SC.

We move large - 2000+ lb precast concrete pieces locally all the time our go to is a crane company - ours in particular have allot of options and generally we just need a flatbed /crane combo. I'm always surprised at how reasonable it is. in your case they would receive and offload the truck at their yard and get it to your house and in place, or as close as they can.

other low rent options - towtrucks - they like cash and have a nice tiltable flatbed to winch that crate right into your garage. to keep shipping reasonable find a commercial adress with a forklift to recieve the shipment - lumber yards have big forks, or if using an LTL carrier have them hold it at the nearest hub and pay the towtruck to get it from there to your house. they should be able to load the towtruck.

I dont think it can go LTL since it is not in a pallet. The company i work for does civil engineering design for freight facilities.

I reached out to Pedowitz Machinery Movers located in Long Island, NY area. They are working on a quote. I got an email later from someone i spoke with and he asked how close it is to Greenville and that i may be a good opportunity to meet up with his ex girlfriend. HAHA.

I think they would likely be able to take care of me. They are only 15 mins from the machine and would be able to send it south whenever it made since to do so. Fingers crossed the price is semi reasonable.

First company i called was local to me and asked for a quote on friday, spoke with the guy, sent him a text said he was working on it. No response today, sent a follow up email, no response.

Got the quote back from Pedowitz. $6,850 for pick up, and transport down. Does not include offloading.

Tell me about it. Still waiting on the local guy to get back to me, but i think i am going to go with this company. Super responsive.
They will be onsite to deliver the new machine and said there would be at least a $500 discount if the crew is already there.

I will rent a forklift on my end for the offloading. Going to buy a pallet jack today since a 5k lb pallet jack ended up in a pawn shop locally and i'm sure i will need it at some point to move the machines around in the garage. Seems like a deal for $200.

delivery driver asked to drop it off sunday. Called the forklift company to see if they could bump it up. They suddenly no longer have a trailer to rent with the forklift.

Called another company was able to line it up for forklift delivery today and was only a little bit more expensive. They basically followed me home. It was actually on a really nice drop deck trailer too.

From what I remember about fork trucks, capacity is also determined by max mast height. Had a coworker that regularly had to lift ICBs that technically exceeded the listed capacity of the truck but did so below full extension. Of course it’s not OSHA approved but if anyone was going to do it I sure trusted her to pull it off.

SR_matt yes, the net capacity is dependent on the lift height as well other factors such as front axle width.

TECHNICALLY a 5k truck will lift 5k to a short height and you loose capacity the higher you go. Most manufacturers won’t publish that, instead they go to “worst case scenario”….for liability reasons. Stick with what the data tag says, it’s there for a reason!

Very fair points. Pretty much anyone else that would have tried this at my old company I would have called an idiot and gone to HR to get their forktruck privileges revoked (I was quality manager and on the safety committee so I could have don’t that with pretty much no questions asked past just the info needed for HR to document it), but the chick I mentioned was an absolute unit and I am sure she probably looked up the machine specs and what heights it could lift what weight to.
