My Shaft Wont Budge!!

I'm trying to separate my pump arm and ram shaft without using metal tools as I don't want to mar the part up. I'm Hesitant to just wrap it in a rag a bunch as every time I try that trick my pliers cut through anyways

As you can see Ive already tried putting it over a blow torch, it has stopped smoking so the lock-tight should be burnt up but it's still just as tight as when I started.

Well heat didn't work, try cold? The old air duster upside down should cool it down really cold, and possibly shrink the part. You're going to want to try to shrink the male thread side more than the whole thing. It's tough if the threads are locked together like that, you might have to mar it up to get it apart anyway.

You can try some rubber scraps on the plier jaws, like a cut up garden hose. Best bet is a smooth jaw vice, it's going to mark it up, but it won't completely shred it. It will offer the best purchase on a round rod though. Hope this helps somehow.

Personally haven't tried it, but seen it work, you can use a copper penny and band it over with pliers and use that as a clamp around the rod, copper being a softer metal shouldn't mar the metal surfaces. Me personally I always use leather and a pair of vise grips/a bench vise

I use a bench vise and red gasket rubber from ace. Red gasket rubber also does well with channel locks.

There’s a tool that someone recommended for using no cocker pnumatics. Can’t remember the name but it like vice grips with rounded surface so it doesn’t mess things up as much. Bought a pair and they work well.

Use a dremel and sacrifice the pump arm with a small cutting wheel.

Soldering iron the female side to expand it and compressed air the male side to shrink. Bicycle tire, flat jawed compression pliers. Done.

It probably bottomed-out on the pump arm threads, deforming the first couple. If you don't want to cut the pump arm off and come in from the back, try to get some penetrating oil in there to keep it from galling on the way out.

Locking crescent wrenches tend to be a good balance between vise grips and nonmarring, but try to find some with a flat face instead of textured.

ive found that parrot jaw vice grips work well for this (maybe what 'Cuda is thinking of). get 2 pairs of the smallest u can find, i also have a tiny pair of needle nose vice grips for this. if its that tight your likely gunna have to hold both sides with some type of vice grips. also- believe it or not, a heat gun usually works better than open flame type heating for separating pump arms from ram shafts -(just what ive found to be true). maybe just the pic but looks like the ram shaft may have been 'trimmed' or cut shorter to work with that pump arm. if this is the case likely the end was burred and locked itself into the pump arm threads- means its gunna get ugly

Thanks for the advice guys, unfortunately luck wasn't on my side this time. Can anyone confirm that empire shafts are the same as eclipse ones?

I would have cut parallel to the pump arm then spread the cut apart with a small screw driver to get to the threaded shaft.

Do you mean PE and Empire shafts are the same? I thought the ID shafts were slightly thicker than Empire shafts to get a lower bolt closing force.

i know the ram bumpers are all the same. the id and empire rams are copies of the pe/belsales rams. unsure if the id shaft will work, empire is the same. they are all so similar, i dont have an id shaft to check

I have personally used an ID shaft as a replacement for a broken eclipse one in the past (just last year to be more specific)

I'm pretty sure the GTR ram shaft is too large for the Belsales/Eclipse rams. I think the OP needs an Empire ram shaft (eek I know, but pretty sure that'll work).
