What's up with 98-thread Freak backs?

So I finally tracked down a 98-threaded freak back because I wanted to try and bore match my paint, maybe even slightly underbore, BUT Why is there a gap machined into the back?
It's like there's a solid inch or so of what I'm assuming is a generous overbore before the ball touches the insert. The back is also longer than other freak backs because of this. What was the thought process behind this choice? do tippmann bolts chew up inserts or something? did I somehow buy a counterfeit/knockoff?
    Pics attached for reference.

The bolt will pull the insert backwards into the breech without the shoulder put in

    SL682 has the same issue

The bolt will push the ball into the insert before discharging the air. I have an armson barrel with the same step in it. If the insert is back further the bolt just jams into it.

-This. The M98 bolt actually enters the barrel by quite a bit. On the standard Freak backs, the insert can be slid out either direction- forward after the tip is removed, or backward out the breech.

The M98 backs have a step back there, that's both room for the bolt to enter the barrel, and to keep the insert from being dragged backward by the bolt.
