Returning Player… Best $600 Marker Discussion

EDIT: Had a friend offer me a TM40 for $500. Waiting on photos but he says mint condition. Thoughts?

Slowly dipping my toes back into the sport. All my gear is old and in various states of working. Been buying some new stuff here and there on sale.

Seeing brand new Shocker AMPs and VCON Rippers at $600 which seems decent for both. Used market is around $500 for the AMP so I’d rather buy new unless ya’ll know some deals I don’t. The Etha3 is “entry” level, but it’s PE and not discounted for the value.

I’m a fan of PE and almost always shot poppets in the past. Had an Ego 6 and Ego 8 that I used until life got in the way.

Stacked tube poppets seem mostly dead. Sad, but I get that technology marches forward.

One of my shit coins is doing well and I have turned $20 into about $600 over 4 years of hodling so looking to cash out and get a new gun.

I have three kids and full time job with consulting I do on the side so time is short. As a teen I could always find time to tech gear and play around with different bolt systems and efficiency stuff, but now I just want something stress free that I run and gun with. Maybe play a local tournament if I lose a few pounds.

I was never a Bob Long fan and still find the milling on the Ripper to be obnoxious, but like that it’s a (in-line) poppet. I owned everything from matrix’s and shockers and cockers and various pumps and mechs and auto mags in the past, but always went back to the Egos for anything serious play related (minus pump tournaments).

The Shocker is interesting. I always hated the company, but the SFT was for some reason my favorite spool gun “back in the day.” I think the understated styling and ergonomics just worked for me even if the Matrix had an objectively better shot. I also liked the sound they made (no idea why). I don’t mind the styling on the AMP for the same reason. It’s simple, clean, and looks good (to me). The small front grip is whatever… I always was a “thumb over barrel/body” guy anyways.

The Etha3 I hear great things about and should keep up with everything I want to do with it. It’s the only one I’ve actually held and I don’t mind the ergonomics at all. Not a huge fan of the plastic body as it doesn’t give the premium feel, but I also don’t have any concerns regarding durability. It’s PE and PE always treated me well in the 00’s… People seem to have that sentiment today which is good. It’s also $50 cheaper (yay).

Looking for feedback on considerations I may be missing. Kind of leaning towards the shocker right now, but definitely don’t have my mind made up.

    Thanks all!

You don't have to buy a ripper body. The vcom had the option to switch between poppit and spool engines.

Emek (upgrade if you want), Jolo, FS 17/45, and a Crbn mask…and you’ll have $200 left over for field fees and paint 😉

If you're ok with buying used, get a 170R. It's basically an Etha 3 with a metal body, so you'll get that premium feel you're missing.

The ripper body is “on sale” brand new for $600 at ANS gear right now. Only reason it’s part of the discussion. If there’s a better deal for something not so gaudy elsewhere I’m all ears!

Time is a problem for me right now and I don’t have social media. I’ll check the forums here, but are they still considered active and safe? Bought and sold at least 40 markers back in the day many via forums. Had a ton of feedback on the OG A5OG, here (had an account around 2007 originally) and then PBN. It sounds like most had gone to social media, but I avoid that stuff.

Oh yeah, the forums are plenty safe here. I've done hundreds of transactions here, and never had a problem.

There's also ebay. Several 170Rs for under $600 over there. Ebay is a bit more of a gamble, but the nice thing is that PE guns are pretty hard to break, so it's very unlikely you'll get something broken.

You can find a vcoms well under $600 used. Heres a non gaudy one. Rebuilt and ready to go. .
Both engines vis(spool) and vcom (popet). Been playing paintball for over 15 years and this was one of the best guns I’ve ever shot. -extra clamping feed neck. -field one barrel sock. -pressure tester(for changing hp and lp reg when switching engines. ).

I’ve got that on my watchlist now. Thanks!

If you are not planning on playing electro tournaments I would just grab a used Emek / 3M and a LTR then pick a tank size based on how much paint you plan on carrying. The new PE mech markers are the best bang for your buck and they are super reliable and cheap.

I wouldn’t bother with anything electo unless you plan on getting back into that very specific type of tournament style play.

Another option is If you have any of your old markers you can definitely find what you need to get them going again.

If playing in a tournament, it will likely be electro. I played primarily tourney back in the days of 15bps PSP. That stated, I’d definitely play a mech tournament. I played and won some pump tournaments and always loved that play style.

I THINK without looking I still have the following…

                    Ego 8
                    Dye DM3
                    Frankenstein Cocker CCM Pump
                    WGP Superstock
                    Tippmann 98C

The super stock works well, but that’s for the 13 year old. Honestly I’d rock the 98C at a mech tourney.

I rebuilt the ego, but the solenoid is leaky 🥺.

I’d definitely buy used, but my key thing is time. I want to play, but I’m working a full time job and doing consulting work. It’s great money, but it’s also 60 hours/week.

The wife played for the first time when the kid turned 13 for his birthday party. She absolutely loved it. Goal will be to get her into it too. Shoot… she can play with whatever I buy and I’ll play with the Frankenstein pump until I get something else.

Hunting season is coming to a close, so want to get the wife and oldest back out playing again and selfishly for me.

Is there holes in the noid? If not check your LPR piston bumper. They go bad over pressure the noid and it vents to prevent damage. There is a member making replacement LPR piston bumpers. Fix the 08 call it a day. It’s going to be just as good if not better then anything in that price range new.

If you’ve had good experiences with Eclipse Ego’s in the past I’d recommend an Etek 5.

They can be readily found on eBay in like new condition and they’re excellent shooters all around.

This was gonna be my suggestion too if you like the etha. They should be available used pretty readily at you price point. May be able to find a 180r(current iteration of the 170) around that too.

This is my younger sons 170r - ref'd allot of soccer games for it, but it seams he has his heart set on a used LUX all the sudden ( thanks Youtube ). Bought off E-bay, full rebuild by yours truly. Dreamy to shoot this thing has served him well. Fully functional and in near perfect condition - only the slightest bit of ano wear

Plot twist. A friend of mine who doesn’t play offered me a DLX Luxe TM40 for $500. Waiting on photos now. He says it’s “mint.” He took in lieu of payment for something or as collateral for a loan. He’d offered it a year(ish) ago for more. I hit him up to see if he had any new markers and he said he still had that one. Seems to be a good deal if it works?
