Tippmann 98 rental questions

Tippmanns are so over gassed that they can chop and cycle just fine through them. Obviously this isn't ideal, but the average rental player may or may not notice. They can also have the breach washed out with water without getting water in the rest of the gun. Stbbs are setup so they can be cleaned easily. Tippmanns are made so they don't need to be.

As a semi related side question, has anyone ever set up a third party rental service at a field (ie rent guns out the back of the car for $1 under the going rate).

I hose off my electros just fine...... No I'm not aiming water straight into the grip frames but pb gear can handle water

The azodin guns look good and there’s a lot of nice looking guns I didn’t consider. For the record the GTI is a bit past the piranha lines prime just like the tippmann platinum is.

I think the overgassed is a big deal. The piranhas were always messing with main springs should it be the red one or the stock one or the blue one or one from the 8 spring kit to get good cycling and not too much velocity then the tippmanns were like “what’s a main spring?”

The non mainspring based velocity adjustment on the tippmanns are a huge reliability feature because it allows you to adjust FPS independent from the cycling functionality of the gun, something piranhas can’t do except by changing bolts

I would never consider having guns available for “rent” except maybe to friends I don’t like, and it would be a good way to get black balled by the field owner.

and to be clear I’m not setting up a rental fleet here just a personal mini fleet of loaners to bring some guys out to the field either local outlaw or to an actual field.

a good option to me would be a bunch of azodin kp pumps they’re a bit more money but would be a really ideal way to get people playing but I don’t think I want to hope that the O rings in the azodin vertical reg can handle co2 well and I don’t want to run heavy tanks but if I wanted to have a higher budget loaner fleet I think that would be a top pick, or a bunch of traccers but I don’t like back bottle and setting up bottom lines on those is a bit of work to me.

I'm sure you could hose off most any blowback/mag/cocker, but I'd just be concerned about rust and/or wading lube away. The hammer is far enough away from the bolt on a tippmann, that I wouldn't be concerned about that.

Cuhuna, I did realize you were just making this fleet up for friends, I was just wondering if anyone was so resourceful (or silly) to do a third party rental service.

The original Kaos pump ran at 800psi with a gas through grip. The newer ones might also be able to do the same, but I do recall an older thread where the azodin techs recommended switching out valve bodies.

Hold up, I'm not talking about the KP or the KD, just the super cheap base kaos. Should be around $65 new. There is no regulator, just a gas through

One other thing, what markers does your field rent out?

If it's 98s this seems like a pretty expensive idea to just give your friends the same markers.

Last I checked the field nearest to me had modern piranha variants. But I don't plan on playing there.

I will think about grabbing a couple of https://www.ebay.com/itm/Azodin-kaos...IAAOSwoWBgGMr9 to go with the tippmanns. But I picked the tippmanns for a reason, mostly because they remind me of the gooder older days and the Azodin lineup reminds me of the badder china days, despite them being a good modern blowback variant. I'll still think about it.

Toestr I think that you could get 20-50 dollars if you were willing to let a renter pay you for a modern electro rig or even an EMEK you would play the field and then tell the kid "yo dude I can let you use this rig for the rest of the day if you give me 20 dollars" but you should get a deposit too. And still youd want to be sure your field doesn't offer an upsell package like some of them do. With the emeks I'd think there should be a lot of upsell opportunity.

I mean heck, there's no reason all your markers need to be the same either. Pick up a 98, a5, kaos, trilogy, bt4 spyder, and a few e-framed verients. If you are fine with used you could get a decent number and verity. If the goal is to get your friends more interested in paintball, giving them options may be helpful.

Let your friends decide what they want to shoot for the day

Then heck, if they are interested, sell them whatever marker they want on the cheap

I want them all to be the same because its fun to me, and mostly because I like the tippmanns. Also, they have no knowledge of paintball guns and I don't want them to wrongly feel that one gun is better than the other and use it as an excuse for getting whooped.

If I was doing a higher budget thing, it would be all stock class phantoms with joyride harnesses but that setup would be significantly more expensive, and also involves the learning curve of pumping without chopping and stuff. But that would be my ideal setup because I like 12grams and the low ROF means presence in not-specifically-for-paintball places would be less impactful.

But yeah, I'm making them match because I want em to.

I've also considered finding a bunch of trracers / mavericks and I've also regretted not keeping all the late model SL68 2's I've had just for this reason and the few good deals that have come through here lately on them too. But that's life. Semi auto is a bit more straight forward anyways.

I know exactly what you mean about keeping things the same between players. I set up 3 of my various cousins' kids with A-5s at Christmas for their first guns. I wanted something easy to use, something that could take a beating and that I had the parts in-hand to fix. One of the A-5s ended up being an R/T as it was what I could get, but all the kids end up with basically the same gun and the same general experience.

On the flip side, you realize a ton of new players end up buying a 98c not because it's good but because that's all they have ever used and are familiar with right? They use a rental at a field, feel it's good while not actually comparing it to anything and end up buying one.

Then if you are a few of my friends, or a ton of newer players out there, spend $200 on "upgrades" and finally someday realize the azodin blitz that costs $160 is a better marker than the $350 tippmann they are holding and leave paintball because they feel it's too expensive

But, I totally understand from your point of view to keep things simple just getting all the same markers. If you are going with the 98s, and if you want them all exactly the same, you are either going to have to buy new or be really picky about which used ones you get because they have made changes over the years.

Yeah I am just getting original ribbed "model 98"s I've got two, and a spare set of shells. I can identify old vs new customs from a pretty long ways off too, but I decided to get the old boys because it just makes it a little harder to procure so I get to do more hunting.

If these guys end up buying a rig it won't be tippmanns and especially not upgrades for tippmanns, no threat of that. If anyone takes to it, they will be getting a phantom for stock class action and a ccm for everything else, just like me. They know enough to listen to my advice. They are adults with 1600 dollar wheelsets for their bikes. One of them is even smart enough to understand why a person would play with a pump gun instead of an electro without experiencing the gameplay himself. Good stuff.

We'll see if they actually come play.

Cool cool, yeah I'd say do a rebuild off the bat, if you are using co2 sick to poly rings and replace those ring clips with c clips.

New detents, and if you want to go further, polish the internals

If they work they're just getting detents and oil!

But as far as polishing the guts goes - why? Does it actually do anything? One of mine came with polished guts and I trust it less as a result.

I'm tempted to go with HPA tanks because they're close in price to CO2 tanks these days but I dunno, like many I miss the smell of c02 and a full 20oz could pack further into the woods and provide enough air for the day pretty much, vs filling from a scuba every other game or so with a 48ci 3k tank.

Polishing the guts and doing a bunch of spring work is the only upgrade I would ever recommend for a 98. It makes them shoot much much smoother and more consistently. Increases efficiency too. I have never seen a polished Tippmann have any reliability issues as far as cycling goes. I HAVE seen players using shake and shoots chop like crazy on a polished Tippmann though. If the polishing job is done right the kick is reduced to the point where it doesn't "shake" enough to feed well. Easy fix here is just a revy or my preferred hopper for loaners, a Proto Primo.

Better consistency mostly. If it's done way wrong I could see done recocking issues but typically its one of the easiest things you can do to improve a tippmann

Your call on co2 vs HPA, one thing to consider though, if you go to an actual field, are they HPA only? It would be kind of counter productive to have to rent HPA tanks for your rental markers

If it ever goes bad, you can unscrew the stem and flip it. If you're asking if you can just buy the seal separate from the cup and stem; I've never seen them.
